Denmon) Hanover stops Black Knights 21-3 By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer Coach Rich Gorgone's Lake- Lehman Black Knights went on the board first in their game with Hanover Monday afternoon when Quarterback Sam Gorgone ended a Knight 14-play drive to kick a field goal and put his team in the lead 3-0. But that proved to be the Knights only score against a strong Hawks team. The lead was overcome in the closing seconds of the first half when the Hawks came alive and Eric Pearson hit Dennis Monk with a 42-yard pass in the end zone for six points. Jamie Proctor kicked the extra point and the Hawks went in front 7-3 and never looked back. “Our kids played a great game despite losing,” said coach Gor- gone. “They played their hearts out but just couldn't take advantage of the big opportunities. They were at the three-yard line in the first half but couldn't get the ball over against the Hawk defense. “Hanover hit hard and the three turnovers our kids made hurt. Hanover got the big play on the pass into the end zone in the first half with only seconds remaining. That hurt us. If we had score when we had the chance earlier we could have gone into the second half with a tied score. I'm proud of the kids. Terry Martin rushed for over 100 yards and Sam (Gorgone) played a great game.” The second half was a defensive game for both sides, but the Ha- nover defense forced three Knight turnovers. Chris George recovered a Knight fumble and Hanover took advantage to put their second score on the board. The kick was good and the Hawkeyes took a 14-3 lead. The Knights then had several chances to score but turnovers again stalled them. In the final minutes of the second half. Gor- gone was hit hard by Hawk Steve Stillarty, popping the ball loose. Robert Barr picked up the loose ball and ran 70 yards for the touch- down. The kick was good to give Hanover a 21-3 win. Crestwood upsets Mounts By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer ! Until the final quarter, the Mountaineer offense came back after each Crestwood score to stay even, but the defense then broke down against the Comets who put two scores on the board to win 27- 13. Coach Ted Jackson said his club just wasn't able to stop a superior Crestwood offense. “They weren't ready for the Comets offense. Our kids didn’t do a good job on either defense or offense. Crestwood dominated the entire game. Mor- ris throwing the interception late in the fourth quarter hurt us, but that's only one factor. Alot of things went wrong Monday.
