DENMON Staff Writer Dallas sophomore Brian Burd is only 15 years old, but he was as big as any player on the field Fri- day night as he carried 14 times for more than 100 yards and scored two touchdowns as the Mountain- eers beat a much bigger Coughlin team. “Brian played a terrific game,” said Coach Ted Jackson, “And our defense came together and went head-to-head with Coughlin. They | are a good team and are big. Our ~ kids were great,” Ly Fi vi ~~ J Burd impressed not only Dallas Coach Ted Jackson but the Dallas fans as well, who came to see the Mountaineers go up against the AAA team. In the opening quarter, Dallas fans’ hopes were dashed when the Crusaders Joe O'Donnell ran off tackle, cut back and sprinted 51 yards for a Coughlin lead with less Dallas answered in the second quarter when Burd went in from the 17-yard line to even the score at 7-7. Crusader fans appeared shocked when they saw Dallas back in the game. In the second half Coughlin was hurt by turnovers but their luck appeared to turn when Damian Evanko intercepted a Morris pass to stop a Mountain- eer drive. The Crusaders were ‘unable to move the ball against the Mounts and Dallas took over. Burd lost no time putting his team in front when he ran 44 yards to go into the end zone for the score. Chris Williams kicked the extra point and the Mountaineers led 14-7, enough to give them the game. Burd was playing tailback posi- tion, the same position Tony Baldo played before he moved to West Virginia. Friday night he and Justin Reich were filling in for starter Dave Podehl, who was injured. The win moved Dallas to 4-0. than three minutes off the clock. Mount kickers top Seminary 3-2 Dallas Mountaineers scored three goals in the second period to edge Wyoming Seminary who scored one goal in the second and one in the third period before the Mounts held them off. Erick Ursiak scored the first goal in the second period for Dallas on an assist by Morris, then Morris scored unassisted. Matt Sleighton scored the third goal for the Mountaineers unassisted. The win moved Dallas to 8-1 to continue their first place lead in Division 1-A. Field hockey shuts out Northwest 3-0 Sue Richardson's two assists played a key role in the Dallas girls field hockey team shutting out Northwest 3-0 Monday at the Dallas field. Amy Shelley scored the first goal for Dallas off an assist by Richardson in the first half and Karen Wisnieski scored the second goal on an assist by Bichideon, Megan Hardisky scored a goal unassisted in the second Dallas outshot Northwest 20-0 on shots on goal and 32-1 on corners. Dallas harriers split tri-meet Dallas Mountaineers lost their first meet Monday when Berwick runners placed second, third and fourth to defeat Dallas 23-33 and Bishop O'Reilly 15-50. Despite the loss, Mountaineer Steve Oliver came in first in 14:28. Matt Samuel placed fifth, Brian Smith seventh, Eric Williams nine, Chuck Clothier 11th and Bill Jones 14th. The Dallas runners defeated O'Reilly 15-59 to move their record to 7-1. Oliver, Samuels lead Dallas harriers to wins Steve Oliver led the Mountaineers to wins over Bishop Hafey and Seton Catholic last Tuesday when he set a course record of 17:48 over Bishop Hafey's course. Oliver led the Mounts to a 16-43 win over Hafey and a 15-48 win over Seton Catholic. Dallas’ Matt Samuels came in second in 19:25, Brian Smith third in 19:26 and Eric Williams fourth in 19:27. A Bishop Hafey runner placed fifth but Mount Bill Jones placed sixth in 20:03. Bishop Hafey took seventh, Eric Mateyka placed eighth, Mount Shawn Miller came in ninth in 20:31 and Bishop Hafey finished in 10th. In the girls run, Dallas’ Gretchen Schuler came in third in 21:35 and Lynn Baluh came in seventh in 28:48 despite the Dallas girls losing by forfeit to both teams due to lack of a full team. Soccer team shuts out Scranton Prep Dallas Mountaineers runners moved their record to 7-1 last Tuesday with a 3-0 win over Scranton Prep to continue in first place, one game in front of Bishop Hoban. Brian Fett scored the first goal for Dallas with a penalty kick and Eric Ursiak picked up his sixth goal of the season with an assist by Andy Flint. Mike Tomaine scored the final goal for Dallas on a penalty kick in the third period. Zahorsky wins tie breaker and football contest In came down to the wire in deciding the first winner in the Dallas Post/Treat Pizza football contest. Andy Zahorsky of Dallas was last week's winner after he picked six of the games correctly and was the closest in picking the tie-breaker score. After all ten of the games were finished Zahorsky and another entrant found themselves in a tie after each correctly picked six of the games. The tie-breaker score of the Chicago Bears /L.A. Raiders game was then used and Zahorsky was the closest. The games in last week's contest all turned out to be exciting. The Tennessee /Auburn game was not counted in the end because it ended in a tie so the winner actually picked six of nine games correctly, not too bad. The win will allow Zahorsky to enjoy two pizzas from Treat Pizza in Dallas. DENMON Staff Writer Lake-Lehman kickers take Tigers 3-1 Two goals by Brian Kelly and a third by Jason McDade led the Black Knights to a 3-1 win over the Tunkhannock Tigers Monday at Lehman. The win moved the Knights to 6-3 in their division. The Knights scored their three goals in the first period with McDade putting the first score in the cage unassisted. Kelly got the second goal on a penalty kick and scored unassisted about 4 1/2 minutes later. The Tigers scored their lone goal in the second period. Black Knights runner split in tri-meet Wyoming Seminary’s harriers took seven of the top 10 places to defeat the Black Knights 26-33 and down Seton Catholic 15-50. The Knights split by defeating Seton 19-36. Knight Charlie Jacoby led'dll runners over the Lehinan course with a time of 19:22 and Chris Campbell placed third with 19:58. Bob Ruggere came in sixth for the Knights and Dan Wilson placed 14th. Knights linksmen edged by Bishop O'Reilly Bishop O'Reilly edged the Black Knights 179-183 Monday afternoon on the Twin Oaks course with Queensman Greg Hlavac medalist with as score of 42. Rob Terescavage and Jeff Hynick each fired 45 for the Knights. Mark Shisson hit 46 and Rob Leahey shot 47. Lady Knight stickers win thriller In a game that went into overtime, Dallas and Lake-Lehman girls hockey teams thrilled fans who came to see the two Back Mountain teams go up against one another. The Lady Knights broke a scoreless tie at 2:19 into the overtime period when Trudy Wandel hit a pass to Heidi Wenrich who knocked it in for a 1-0 score. The lone score was all the Knights needed to win the contest. “It was a well-played game and real exciting to watch,” said Coach Jean Lipski. Both teams played well and a great offense by both teams was shut down by the outstanding play of the defensive squads. “The game could have gone either way," said Lipski. “Every player on the field gave it all they had.” Both teams played evenly with Dallas shooting 10 on goal to Lake- Lehman's eight and Lehman having seven corners to Dallas’ five. Dallas goalkeeper Mollie Connolly had four saves to Knight Becky James’ six. Earlier in the week, the Lady Knights shut out Meyers 4-0, Sept. 26, with two goals by Jen Cross, one by Michelle Naugle and one by Trudy Wandel. Cross scored her first goal on an assist by Naugle and her second early in the second half off an assist by Wandel. Naugle scored unassisted in the third period and Wandel scored in the fourth period on an assist by Heidi Wenrich. Girls volleyball shuts out Coughlin 2-0 The Lady Knights volleyball team shut out Coughlin 2-0 Tuesday, Sept. 25, behind the strong play of Karen Zier and Jill Smigielski at the net. Tracy Krupa had some fine setting and Karen Stefanowicz had four kills. The Knights won 15-2, 15-4. Knights kickers defeat Crestwood The Black Knights soccer team defeated Crestwood 3-1 Wednesday afternoon to tie for second with Bishop Hoban with a 5-3 record. Tim Norkunk scored the winning goal in the third period after Brian Kelly scored in the second period off an assist by Jason Turner. Jason McDade scored the third goal for the Knights off an assist by Kelly to give the Knights their 3-0 lead. Crestwood scored late in the fourth period on a goal by Heath Jones. DENMON Staff Writer Lake-Lehman senior Trudy Wandel has proved to be a sparkplug for the Knights field hockey this season, drawing acco- lades from her coach and team- mates. “Trudy has worked hard this summer and is working hard dur- ing our season. She plays offensive point and thus feeds the two girls ahead of her.' She is strong both offensively and defensively,” said Lake-Lehman Coach Jean Lipski about this week's outstanding athlete. * Trudy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Wandel of Lake Township, has played field hockey since seventh grade and was a member of the junior high varsity where she played link or midfielder under various coaches. In senior high Trudy subbed in 10th grade and in her junior year and this year started on the varsity team. During these two years she has scored five goals, four of them this season and has had four as- sists this year. In past years they are too numerous for her to re- member. A dedicated hockey player, she has attended Lake-Lehman's camp since eighth grade and this sum- mer, Trudy attended the White Mountain Sports Camp at St. Andrew’s School in Delaware. Field hockey is her favorite sport, al- though she also plays on the girls high school soccer team. This year’s team has a 7-0- 1 ! record, having defeated Dallas 1- 0: Td in overtime last Friday. “I used to roller skate which helped for conditioning,” Tuy said. “I did figures and free ae, and have won more than 100 tro- phies in plaques counting regional, A state and national competition, but | I quit about two years ago. ay “Our team plays well together because we are like a family.
