Denmon) Book discussion series at Hayfield The community is invited to participate in the seventh season of Great Books at Hayfield, an in- formal discussion series open to all who enjoy reading and discuss- ing great literature. The programs are free and refreshments will be served. - “Daisy Miller” by Henry James, first published in 1878 will be discussed on September 24, 7 p.m. in the Community Center of Hay- field House. Leading the discus- sion will be Irene Thomas, Admin- istrative Assistant in the Continu- ing Education Department. “Daisy Miller,” set in Switzer- land and Rome, tells the story of a young American girl visiting Eu- rope for the first time. The author presents the conflicts between American innocence and independ- ent behavior and the rigid social conventions of the American col- ony in Rome, where the moral judgements were based entirely on the “appearance of morality.” “The Cherry Orchard” by Anton Chekhov is the discussion slated for October 22 and on November 19, “Walden” by Henry David Thoreau will be the topic.
