The goal will be to pro- mote literacy awareness in the Dallas area and surrounding communities and to intensify ef- forts to spread literacy and educa- tion. \ \ a AN SRE a RN NN NA SA According to recent studies, one adult in five is functionally illiter- ate and unable to read a job appli- cation, street sign, or poison warn- ing and less than one-half of high school seniors read at adequate levels to carry out moderately complex tasks. Literacy affects everyone through lost money in businesses, increased government welfarerolls, overcrowded prisons, and limited educational growth to children of low-literate parents. The Education Department of the Club plans to present pro- grams to its members and to work with people in the community to spread literacy and education. Jean Hillard is President of the Dallas Area Federated Women's Club. Theresa Thompson is Edu- cation Chairman. Al Landis and Earl Phillips were recently inducted as Paul Harris Fellows which is awarded for putstand- ing service to the community.
