4 & J The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, July 25, 1990 13 SPORTS National moves up on Klick's no-hitter The Back Mountain National boys Little League team continued it domination of the District 16 tournament Monday night, trounc- ing Jenkins Township 9-1. Winning pitcher Rich Klick survived a shaky fourth inning in which he hit two batters and walked another to load the bases. But Klick was saved by a stellar double play. With the bases loaded, a ground ball got through shortstop John Oliver. But left fielder Phil Gager gunned a throw to the plate to stop a run, and catcher Kevin McDonald fired the ball to third to nail a sliding Jenkins’ Dave Kivak. One run scored on the play, but the Jenkins team seemed stunned by the sudden turnaround and never threatened again. : Klick went on to pitch a no- hitter, marred only by three hit batters. One of the beanings broke a Jenkins batter's glasses, but luckily did no more damage than causing a cut on his cheek. Big hitters for Back Moutain were Dan Podehl, who went three- for-three including two doubles, and John Oliver, who was two-for- four with a solo home run in the top of the fourth. Despite playing on its field, Back Mountain was the visiting team for the game, a fact that surprised late-arriving fans. Also joining the hit parade were Jason Seward, who went two-for- four and drove in two runs, and Greg Bogdan, whose sixth inning single scored McDonald and Po- dehl. Justin Jumper was one-for- one and scored twice, while Griffin Bicking went one-for three with a run scored and an rbi. Manager John Oliver said “I'm very pleased with these boys. They all are capable of coming through in any game at any time. They are very mature and have played to- gether since they were nine. They are a playoff type ball club. They play outstanding defense.” National, which is the only undefeated team left in the tour- nament, will have a bye Wednes- day and will then host the winner of the Hanover at Edwardsville / Larksville game on Friday at 6 p.m. Back Mountain Legion upset by Plains 3-1 Plains pulled an upset on the Back Mountain American Legion team Monday when they broke a 1- 1 tie in the seventh inning by scor- ing two runs to win 3-1. The win broke a string of 10 wins over Plains by the Back Mountain. Plains scored the first run in the game in the third inning when Brian Chaump hit a triple and came home on a sacrifice fly. Keith Schultz, who came in to relieve Chris Engle, knocked in the tying run in the fifth with a single. Plains scored the winning runs in the seventh when B.J. Mush- insky sent Ed Koulik home with a squeeze bunt to make it 2-1 and Chaump stole second and scored when Mike Dobrowalski singled. Troy Strauser led Back Moun- tain at the plate with two hits. TIME OUT - Back Mountain National players had some time to regroup after one of Rich Klick’s pitches struck a Jenkins Township to pitch a no-hitter.
