12 The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, July 4, 1990 SCHOOL American Legion award presented : Daddow-lsaacs American Legion Post 672 recently presented their American Legion Award to the outstanding eighth grade boy and girl from the Dallas Middle School. Local Bucknell graduates announced Bucknell University conferred degrees to 732 graduating seniors during commencement June 3. Oliver receives Citizen's Award At an Awards Program held recently at the Lehman-Jackson Ele- mentary School, Lehman, Charles C. James, Principal, presented the Michael S. Gruen Citizenship Award to John Oliver, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Oliver, 75 Huntsville Road, Dallas. The award is presented annually in memory of Michael Gruen, a sixth grade teacher who died in an automobile accident in October, 1976. The recipient is selected by teachers and students on the basis of those qualities which best exemplify a good citizen-academ- ics, dependability, honesty, cooperation, respect and leadership. LL HTERERES Loryn Mazur wins art award Loryn Mazur, of Shavertown, a second-year student in the Luzerne ~ County Community College Commercial Art program, recently took second place honors in the student competition of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Ad Club. More than 50 entries from Northeastern Pennsylvania colleges were entered in the annual contest, which was judged by the Patrick Media Groups Creative Art Directors. The entries were displayed at the annual Spring conference of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Ad Club held at the East Mountain Inn in Scranton. Gilgallon wins poetry contest John Gilgallon, a junior student at Bishop O'Reilly High School, Kingston, has been notified that he has won first and third prizes in the West Pittston Library Poetry Contest. The son of Mr. and Mrs. John Gilgallon of Shavertown, John is an honor student and a member of the school’s Mock Trial team. The SDACT, which represents unionized lay teachers throughout the diocese, asked 7th and 8th grade students from Catholic grammar schools across the Scranton Diocese to address the topic, “The Most Important Lesson I've Learned in Catholic School.” Entries were judged on originality of thought, seriousness of purpose and grammatical correctness. The daughter of Dr. Mark and Maureen Stair of Trucksville, Shannon received a tuition gift certificate for Bishop O'Reilly High School, where she will attend school in the fall. Her essay was chosen from over 600 entries.
