DENMON ' Staff Writer Senoir John Baranowski of ' Lake-Lehman has been a member . of the high school’s championship volleyball team since he first went ‘out for the team as a freshman. “I became interested in volley- ball because of my dad whe has coached the team since volleyball ‘became an official sport at Lake- Lehman. I liked the sport from the beginning and I guess I got better as time went on,” John said. John is modest in describing his talent. In his freshman year, he was named All-Scholastic on the second team and in his sophomore and junior year, John was named ‘to the first All-Scholastic team and in his junior year was selected as Most Valuable Player in the con- ference. John was also named to the All State team in his junior year. The son of John and Jeris Bara- A John is a natural athlete "® as he has proven also in his four years on the high school football ‘team, where he plays split end and ‘defensive back. He hasbeen on the Varsity team for the past three years playing under high school coach Rich Gorgone. © John has been captain of the volleyball team for the past two ‘years and this year is depended on ‘to lead the team. '+ “We have five seniors back this JOHN BARANOWSKI year,” John said. “All of them played varsity last season so they are a big help to the team although we lost two of our leading players, Dave Callahan and Mike Paraschak, through graduation. We have some underclassmen who are doing a great job as well as such as Brian Kelly, Rob Spencer, Paul Klemu- nes, Brian Maruca and Dave Baranowski leads Lehman volleyball Knapp. “Our regular starters include Mike Doerfler, Chris Tawes, Jason Turner, Ben Haughney, Jake Kirchner, Matt Kukosky, Mike Taylor, Mark Stroud and myself,” John explained. | The first year John played as setter but in his sophomore and junior year, he has played setter and hitter and has proven to be a greatleaderand an inspiriration to the other boys. Going in to Monday's game with Wyoming Valley West, the team was 7-0 and ranked 20 in the state and 10 in the East in the Pennsyl- vania Volleyball Coaches Associa- tion Poll. The Knights are the only local team in the rankings. John is planning to attend col- lege and has been accepted at East Stroudsburg and at Lock Haven. “I have visited both and now it is up to me to decide which one to attend. If] go to East Stroudsbuerg I will play volleyball, if to Lock Haven I will play football,” John said. In his leisure time John likes to play golf or go fresh water fishing. He also works during the summer in the local area. “Volleyball is exciting, fast- moving and fun,” John said. “It's a great sport.” It is evident he thinks so by the way he plays. John is an inspira- tion to the entire team.
