Denmon) Young Knights hope to be threat By CHARLOT M. DENMON Staff Writer The Lake-Lehman Black Knights baseball team lost their opening game to Bishop Hoban 3-1 last Monday, but coach Dwight Barbacci is not discour- aged. “Sam Gorgone, a junior, went six innings and struck out six before we took him out for so- phomore Don James. The sea- son is early and we hope to be in the race,” Barbacci said. There are 28 athletes out for this season's team, many of them sophomores who are showing great potential. “We're a young team com- pared to some, but we have some great athletes. We have only four returning lettermen and they form a good nucleus. Senior Mike Strutko will be at second, and junior Troy Strauser will be at shortstop. “In addition to Gorgone, who saw some action in his sopho- more year, and when he's not pitching he will probably be on first. Junior Mike Sholtis will also see action on first. Jesse Sorber and Randy Parry, jun- iors, will play third. Barbacci said junior Jerry Owens will play left field and junior Kris Bauman will pitch or play right field. Junior Brian Gouger is also an outfielder. Konigus can also pitch and sophomores Don James and Shaun Spencer are also good on the mound, Barbacci said. James can play in the outfield and junior Dave Konopke will see some action this season in the infield. Barbacci is high on the many sophomores on the squad. Chuck Finn is good behind the plate or in the outfield and Eric Stogoski and Jeff Hynick are good in the infield. The other sophomores will play junior varsity and are likely to see varsity action before the season ends, according to the coach. The Knights have two excel- lent power hitters in Konigus and Chamberlain. Konigus proved it in last Monday's game when he hit a long double to the outfield at the Knights field. The Knights will play in the North Division of Class AA which includes Hoban, Seton Catho- lic, Bishop O'Reilly, Wyoming Seminary and West Side Tech. . They will also meet the South Division teams, Meyers, GAR, Hanover, Northwest and Bishop Hafey. “The teams who are tough in the AA are Bishop Hoban and Bishop O’ Reilly. Both have most of last year’s kids back. GAR and Hanover are also tough. Hanover has everybody back from last year and GAR have many of them back, some of them their basketball players. I don't know much about their pitching yet,” Barbacci said. “We will just take one game at a time, as we have in the past,” Barbacci said. “I have two excel- lent assistants, Paul Hilderand, in his fifth year as my assistant, and Vince Stryzewski, a volun- teer, who is doing a great job for us.” ADMISSION TICKETS FANFAIR EVENTS PHOTO/AUTOGRAPH SESSIONS WIN A DREAM VACATION FOR TWO! « IGA « CARRIAGE INN « STEPPIN' UP « DECKER LUMBER « CHAMPION FORD « RAY'S SHURSAVE « PICKETT'S CHARGE WEM AM - 1460 FOR DETAILS!
