DENMON Staff Writer Dallas girls basketball coach Kit Karuza likes most of what she sees in her team this year, but a lack of depth may hurt them. “We had 15 girls come out for the team this season,” Dallas girls basketball coach Kit Karuza said prior to last Thursday's exhibition game with Lake-Lehman team. “Now we're down to 11 but we have seven returning from last season, which gives us a good nucleus. “Laura Poynton and Jennifer Besecker are seniors and our co- ‘captains. Both are key factors in the success of this season's team. Laura is outstanding on offense and this year will do a great job in leading our defense and Jen is about the quickest I've seen at the basket. Our other returning play- ers are Aria Pierson, Melanie Langdon, Diane Demko, Tina Hite and Kathy Welky. “We have a good shooting team this season, four of them are ex- ceptional and we have a fifth one that is good. The girls are an excel- lent running gun team. They're pretty fast and in good physical condition.” Karuza said the team has had good success in scrimmages but their weakness will be depth. “Hite has improved and Demko has improved dramatically. Lang- don will play point guard and she has speed and strength. Pierson is strong and will play center. “We have a ninth grader on the team this year, Tara Lisnow, who did a good job for us in scrimmage and had a good range with her shots. We now have three girls SENIOR JACKETS - Dallas senior basketball players received their jackets prior to the Dallas-Lake-Lehman exhibition game last Thursday night at the Dallas gym where the Lady Mounts scored a 64-47 win over the Lady Knights. (Photo by C.M. Denmon) is to avoid injuries and to stay out of foul trouble,” Karuza said. He said Welky is fast but needs more experience. He also has twin sisters Monique and Monica Mat- thews out for the team. “They have great potential,” Karuza said. “They are fast but it’s their first year out for basketball and they need more experience but they're learning fast." The Lady Mounts did an excel- lent job against the Lady Knights last week despite the speed of Lake- Lehman's Wendy Skibitsky. LADY MOUNTS NEED MORE PLAYING TIME “Laura Poynton did a great job of staying with Skibitsky,” Lake- Lehman Coach Joe Martini said after the game. “I was disappointed in their playing last Thursday. “We have 23 girls out for basket- ball with 15 or 16 of them on the bench,” Martini said. “It’s difficult to get enough playing time for them all with that many girls. “They're working hard but they don’t do in a game what they learn in practice. Many of them are new and get nervous when they get out on the floor. I was happy with what I saw as the game progressed, however,” Martini said. “We have five letter winners returning and three of them are seniors-Wendy Skibitsky, D.D. Mazur and Molly White. White is injured which hurts us as she is the best rebounder we have. Alyson Davis started last yar. She got nervous when she started the other night but then she got over it and shot in the double figures. Jenny Smith is a wing player and she steadied down in the game. Heidi Wenrich, sophomore and Cherub Honeywell, a freshman, will hold down the fifth starting position. “I have four girls I feel can come in and give us a good performance when needed. They are Heather: Ruger, Jennie Parise, sophomores; Cherise Valanski, junior and Dyan Dymond, freshman. Wendy is a greatball handler and a good leader. She's fast. She's been doing a real quality job running the team and I expect a big year out of her. As Wendy goes, we go,” Martini con- cluded. The Lady Knights are in Division II while the Lady Mountaineers are in Divsion I in the Conference. i 82-ON TAP 826-6827 A A Tl a Nl EN Rl A A A ON TP SYSTEMS | [] — Assorted Beer Tap Handles, Coors, etc. — Beer Line Cleaning Kits, Service, Parts — Beer Items: Signs, Coasters, Shirts — Portable CO" Beer System Rentals — Beverage-Air & U-Line Beer Meisters — C0’ Tank Refills on Premises — Conversion Kits to turn your refrigerator into a Beer Meister LOWEST PRICES IN NORTHEAST PA. 290 S.
