Father Petrasko plans class trip to Guyana in June Father John Petrasko, chaplain and director of Campus Ministry at College Misericordia, recently visited Georgetown, Guyana, to make arrangements for a student group he will accompany in June. The students will participate in a course offered through Misericordia's Religious Studies Department entitled, “Practicum in Christian Ministry.” “The three-credit course is a cross-cultural experience aimed at increasing global awareness," said Father John. “For six weeks begin- ning in June, students will work in various church sponsored projects, as well as study the history and culture of Guyana through lec- tures and field trips coordinated by Sr. Noel Menezes, professor of history at Guyana University.” The students will also partici- pate in a reflection process di- rected by their reading of selected Vatican II Documents. For nearly 100 years, a special relationship has existed between , the Religious Sisters of Mercy— the founders and sponsors of Col- lege Misericordia—and the people of Guyana. Since 1894, the Sisters have served in the mission fields of Guyana and in more recent years, encouraged Guyanese students to attend Misericordia. Language is not a barrier because English is a frequently spoken language in Guyana. Programs of social awareness are an integral part of Misericordia’s Campus Ministry Office. Through- out the year, students serve in various community projects. They provide service at the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, work with underprivileged children, travel to Kentucky to aid the Christian Appalachian Project, prepare meals and host area homeless in coordi- nation with “Volunteers In Service In Our Neighborhoods (VISION)." Students interested in being part of the Guyanese course should contact Father Petrasko at Misericordia’s Campus Minstry Office by calling 675-2181, ext. 314.
