The Dallas Post Dallas, PA Wednesday, January 25, 1989 Alisa Merolli's poem wins prize Alisa Merolli, Shavertown has won first place in a statewide con- test for her poem about child abuse. Miss Merolli is a sixth grade stu- dent at Gate of Heaven School in Dallas. She wrote the poem last year when she was in Mrs. Kelly's class. The class and others across the state participated in the second annual Child Abuse Prevention Poetry Contest sponsosored by the state Department of Public Wel- fare. Miss Merolli is the daughter of Adrian and Nancy Merolli, North Lehigh Street, Shavertown. The poem follows: My God, watch over all the chil- dren : Who need your help and love. Look over them with open arms From the heavens high above. They need your help so desparately When everything looks dim. For sometimes their chances of being loved Might be very slim. Their loved ones are punishing And hurting them so, But the damage they are doing They just don’t know. ' Alisa Merolli The hitting and the “down words” Are not the end of it. It's knowing that these people May never quit. Listen to those children cry, They sound as if they're going to die. They do not know that we are there, Ready and waiting to show that we care. These children are a part of us, And they would not make such a fuss If we can give them any love. So God, give us strength from above! Wedding or Engagement fo announce? . Send it fo The Post P.O.
