pp PEOPLE Lake-Lehman Educator, Mike Sharok, Jr., recently presented his program, The 3G's of Mathemagic: Gambling, Gotchas and Gosintas, at the Professional Education Conference sponsored annually by the PSEA and held this year at Pittsburgh's Westin William Penn « Hotel. The two-day conference 4 focused on the theme, “Profiles: ~~ | Positive Professionals.” More than 700 educators from across Penn- sylvania attended the fall meeting. Mr. Sharok, who teaches for- eign languages and mathematics, ~ |is also a semi-professional magi- Lake-Lehman teacher mixes magic and math cian. He combines magic and mathematics in his program to show his students that math can be fun, and to create an interest in mathematics, he states that per- haps his students will pursue a study of the underlying mathe- matics involved. His ultimate goal is to have his students become! critical thinkers, not gullible be- lievers. Mr. Sharok wants his students tobe entertained, enlightened, but most of all, educated; and he strongly believes that his program accomplishes his goal. Local mechanic masters training program Mr. Timothy Haddle of Dallas, was recently honored by Saab- Scania of America, Inc., for reach- ing the highest level of achieve- ment in the Swedish automaker's technical training program. Haddle, employed by Kunkle Motors, the Saab car dealership of ‘RD 1, Dallas, was awarded the a title of Saab Master Technician at ed ‘a Saab-sponsored banquet in Wilkes-Barre. In order to earn Saab’s highest training award, Haddle, had to work his way up through three intermediate competency levels: Associate, Certified, and Qualified Technician. 3 Timothy Haddie German colonel at Dallas class ~ Recently at Dallas Senior High ‘School, Colonel Hans-Peter von Kirchbach spoke to several of Mr. Arno Miller’ German classes. ColonelvonKirchbach isa Colo- nel in the German Army. He is currently attending the Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania as an International Fellow and isa member of the Class of 1989. Colonel von Kirchbach showed slides of Germany and discussed various topics including: the edu- cational system, the political par- ties, the various regions of Ger- many, and the importance of Germany's location in Europe. Mainwaring named CEO at First Eastern Bank Richard M. Ross, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of First Eastern Corp. and chairman of First Eastern Bank, announced that Bank President William R. Mainwaring has been given the additional title of chief executive officer. The bank is the principal subsidiary of First Eastern Corp., where Mainwaring also serves as president. Ross said that the appointment recognizes Mainwaring's respon- sibilities in First Eastern Bank and First Eastern Corp., which became a multi-bank holding company through its merger in August of 1988 with Peoples First National Bank and Trust Co., Hazleton. Mainwaring's duties have been expanded to include overall supervision of Peoples as well as his continuing responsibil- Glenn Forney named United Penn CEO Dallas resident GlennY. Mainwaring began his banking career at First Eastern in 1965 as an intern while attending college and worked his way through the credit and commercial loan opera- tions of the Bank. He was elected to the First Eastern Board in 1982, appointed Bank president in 1984 and was given the additional title of chief operating officer in 1986. He is a board member of the Committee for Economic Growth, 2 Mercy Med-Care, Inc., and Mercy Hospital. He is a trustee of Wyo- ming Seminary, College Misericor- dia, and is a member of the Penn State Wilkes-Barre Campus Advi- sory Board. Thomas, executive vice- president of Commonwealth Tele- phone Company, has been named to the Advisory Board of Penn State Wilkes-Barre. John N. Thomas has been associated with Commonwealth Telephone, a wholly-owned subsidiary of C-TEC Corporation, since 1985. he has more than 20 years of experience in the telecommunications indus- try. As executive vice president of C- TEC’s Telephone Group, Thomas is responsible for all telephone operations, customer service, development and marketing of basic, enhanced and new services, and the upgrading of network capability and performance. Sadowski finishes nursing course Pam Sadowski, Dallas, was one of several area nurses who re- cently completed a Trauma Nurs- ing course at Wilkes-Barre Gen- eral Hospital.
