SUNDAY, Wor- ship service 9:30 a.m., Sunday Rose Ann Wrobleski teaches When Rose Ann Wrobleski, a benefits assistant for C-TEC Corpo- ration in Wilkes-Barre, goes to teach her class, she doesn’t go to a tradi- tional school or college...and her students are not exactly traditional students. Wrobleski's class is at the State Correctional Institution in dallas (SCID) and her students are nmates there. Since 1983, Wrobleski has been avolved in Thresholds, a national rganization that teaches inmates 1e correct way to approach the ecision-making process. The pro- ram was founded by Mike Bur- jass, M.D., M.P.H., a forrher prison imate. He believes that many crimi- nls’ problems originate from poor ccision-making skills. They act first kfore they think through the situ- don. Thresholds is a program de- gned to teach inmates those skills. The Thresholds program is con- acted at SCID in the Fall and Spring (‘ten-week cycles). Each week of te course, selected inmates par- tipate in one night of general in- suction on the principles of deci- sn-making and one night of aone- ad-one follow-up session with a vlunteer. In this session, inmates acuss how these principles can be aplied to problems in their own les. Because Thresholds is a volun- try organization, the size of each sssion depend upon the number of vlunteers. As Wrobleski states: “We uually average between seven to 1: volunteers. There are always may more inmates that request th program that we can actually acommodate in one session. We try to rach out first to those prisoners whave know will be out of prison in a sbrt period of time; however, we havihad several life inmates in our clases.” Wobleski first became interested in th program while obtaining an assolate degree in Criminal Jus- tice & Luzerne County Community Collee. Now pursuing a degree in Humn Resources Management at King’, College, she maintains her life skills at state prison Rose Ann Wrobleski involvement with the program. When asked if she had any fears or apprehensions about working in the prison environment, Wrobleski repsonds, “Many people do feel uncomfortable in this type of situ- ation. Even though we are inside the prison, you will not find a guard standing outside each of our ses- sion rooms. So I would have to say that yes, we're all hesitant at first. Then, you learn that the inmates are just people, and that fear goes away. You develop a bond with the inmates—a mutual respect. I'm not afraid. In fact, I've told many people that I often feel safer with my stu- dents than I would feel walking down the street.” Wrobleski resides in Shavertown with her husband, Robert, and their four daughters Justine, Kimberly, Shannon and Nicole.
