Denmon Staff Writer Lake-Lehman varsity basketball coach Rodger Bearde believes G.A.R. and Meyers will be the two teams most difficult to beat in the Division AA Wyoming Valley High School Basketball Conference this year. “The Grenadiers have a lot of talentand the Mohawks have a lot of experienced players returning,” Bearde said. “It should be a dog fight among the rest. Northwest and Crestwood are always tough. Bishop Hafey is the unknown this season; they are new in the league and we don't know much about them. Wyoming Seminary is always good and this year they have 11 of their players returning. It will be an inter- esting year.” Bearde said that he had 24 boys out for the team this season, all of them hard workers and with a lot of ability. He has three of last season's starters returning in Len Annetta, Frank Coslett. and Rob Michaels. ' Michaels, unfortunately, will be out of the lineup until sometime after the first of the year due to a broken hand he incurred in the Dallas football game. How well it heals determines when he will be back. “We miss Rob because he had ; great court leadership,” Bearde said. “We are looking to Annetta and Coslett for leadership since both athletes did a fine job during foot- ball season.” Annetta lettered for three years in basketball and is a two year starter on varsity and Coslett who is 6'6" should be a strong force in the middle. Both athletes are in fine shape after football. Bearde’'s Knights may get off to a slow start because so many of them were on the football team but they have a lot of talent. Senior Rick Hynick looks good in the pre-season workouts and will see a lot of action. Stefan Strauser moved in to the district from Mississippi and is fast learning the Knights style of play. Junior Mike Strutko is back and he is a quick hustler and junior. 6’3" Rob Wilson is up from the jun- jor varsity and is showing a lot of potential. Bearde expects Wilson to see a lot of action. Bill Vigorito is an outstanding point guard. He sat out lastyear due to an injury and Ben Haughney, up from the junior varsity, runs the court well. Bearde is impressed by sophomores Bob Jones and Troy Strauser who are showing a lot of ability as well as junior Leo Filip who saw a lot of junior varsity action last year. These are the 12 boys who will play varsity for the Knights this season. “We may be a little rough in the beginning of the first half but if our boys keep their composure during December, they will be very good. The second half they should be tougher. The football players are good athletes and should be toned for basketball. They should show great improvement by then. Their winning football season has helped all the athletes attiude. They know they are fine athletes and can go out and win,” Bearde concluded. Bearde is assisted in his duties by coach Robert Langan. wd Back Mountain Hunter season.
