For Reservations Call 675-0804 Memorial Highway, Dallas Dallas Post/Ed Campbell Castle Inn: a blend of the old and the new By PAMELA AARON Staff Correspondent Occupying the fertile plateau that eases into the surrounding countryside before the hills of Dallas proper make their final descent into the basin of Harveys Lake is the Castle Inn. Located on Route 309, the Castle Inn is an unadorned two-story structure which, nevertheless, houses one of the most effective atmospheres anywhere in the valley. When you arrive at the Castle, prepare yourself for a subtle shift in time and space that will return you to the glowing hearth of a grand, stone fireplace housed in a candlelit cozy, turn of the century English hunting lodge; nestled in the picturesque, mountain vistas of Yorkshire. The mood is mellow, easy, dimly lit by brass candleholders and traditional ‘Dickens’ lanterns; the kind one envisions being lit by the old timekeeper who journeyed the cobblestone streets at dusk. Here, Old World tradition harmonizes discreetly with modern ambiance; creating a handsome duet out of old and new. Deep cherrywood encircles the main dining room, blending gracefully with the red leather-like cushions of the cherry-topped highback booths. Above the room, beam and enclosed eaves draw the eye upward to the elk, moose and deer (heads?..) that complete the rustic decor. The aura is sanguine and serene; austere in it’s elegant simplicity and quite romantic. Rarely do decor fashions predict feasts, but in the case of the Castle Inn, the fare rivals and delights beyond first impressions. Likewise, with a varied menu, it is rare to expect each entree to flourish on its own merit; but, again, one finds each dish created with the care and craft which renders it every bit as good as its predecessor on the menu. This is especially true with meats; fell free to order the best of prime meats at the Castle, they take as much care in their preparation as in any of the other dishes.
