The Montrose Meteors took the championship by downing Host team Tunkhannock 48-40. Dallas played without high scorer Cheryl Gavigan, who has been side- lined with an injury. S. Cook had 10 points for the Mountaineers, tossing in three from the floor and putting in four for five from the free stripe. Vloedman put in five from the court and dumped in one for four from the foul line. Vloedman was named to the All- Tourney team with Gurn and Bla- chek of Montrose and McCain and Hallock of Tunkhannock. In a pre-season game with Nanti- coke, Wednesday, Dec. 12, Dallas was defeated 68-40 by the Nanticoke Trojans. With only three minutes on the clock in the third period, both teams were tied at 37 but the Trojan girls ‘had a big 22 point fourth quarter while holding the Mountaineers to only three points. Nanticoke’s Francine Greco led the Trojan offense with 26 points, 19 of them in the second half. Play gets underway on Thursday, Dec. 27, at 10 a.m. with the girls’ division opener featuring Tunkhan- nock against Lake-Lehman followed by Wyoming Valley West against host Dallas. The boys’ opening round will b Friday, Dec. 28, with Tunkhannock meeting Lake-Lehman at 10 a.m. with Bishop O’Reilly taking on Dallas immediately after the first game. Consolation and championship games will be played on Saturday, Dec. 29, beginning at 9 a.m. All games will be played at the Dallas Junior High School Gym. Four of their players placed in the double figures as the Argents continued their balanced scoring attack. Steve Cook and Kevin Merges had 14 points each and Bob Dombroski and Gary Missal had 10 apiece as they paced their team to high scor- ing periods. Merges scored 10 of his points in the second period when the Argents outscored the Knights 16-12 to take a 38-21 halftime lead. The Argents scored 22 points to the Knights nine in the first quarter. In the third period Cook picked up 10 of the Argents 20 points. Paul Andes led the Knights with 13 points, hitting nine of them in the final period and Bill Bearde hit for 11. Andes tossed five through the nets from the court and went three for four from the foul line. Bearde went through the nets from the court with three goals and shot five Dallas splits Coach Clarence 0Ozgo’s Dallas Mountaineers edged by Valley West 54-53 Tuesday, Dec. 11, then fell to a strong Bishop Hoban team, 56-42, Thursday, Dec. 13. Despite losing to the Argents, Coach Ozgo was pleased with the way his boys played when the score got out of hand. He said he is looking for better performance in the team’s inside game and overall improvement in all phases. In the opening minutes of the game, the young Mountaineers stayed with the more experienced Argents but Hoban’s power proved too much for the less experienced Mountaineers. Dallas continued to play hard but were unable to cope with the Argents, balanced scoring. Hoban had three men in the double figures, Kevin Merges with 13, Steve Cook 12, and Bill Desciak 10. The Argents led the Mountaineers 13-8 at the end of the first quarter and went into the lockerrom ' at halftime with a 27-17 lead. They used a steady, balanced scoring attack in the second half to pull ahead to their 56-42 win. Steve Wilson had 11 points for the Mountaineers followed by Joe Dar- ling with nine and Tim Moyer and Mark Farrell with eight points each. Earlier in the week, Dallas was behind 27-22 in the Valley West game at halftime but Mark Farrell dumped in 12 of his 22 points in the second half to lead his team to a 54- 53 win. Tim Moyer scored all of his nine points in the second half to help the Mounts pull in front. Joe Dar- ling had’ eight points and Steve wilson picked up nine. The Knights took an early first quarter 18-14 lead but the Warriors held the Knights to only six points in the second period while they put on a strong offensive rally and scored 16 points going into the lockerroom with a 30-24 lead. The Knights rallied in the third period and outscored Elk Lake 15 to eight but the Warriors reversed the tables in the final period to outscore the Knights 16-8. Lake-Lehman went three for seven at the foul line. Elk Lake went 17 for 36. Dave Janiczek also hit the double figures column for the Knights with 12 points. ; Heitzsman led Elk Lake with 21 points followed by Hinkley and Taylor with 11 points each. The O'Reilly girls were behind 31- 25 after the third quarter, but when the Lady Knights were unable to score during the next five minutes, the closest O’Reilly girls could come was within one point. With the Knights leading 33-32, Pam Solinski gave her team a three point lead and her teammate Sandy: Dicton added two good free shots to put the win on ice in the closing seconds just before Queenswoman Gino Bayo put in one from the court. The Knights were in front 7-6 the end of the first period but teams went into the lockerroom at haltime with the score tied at 21-21. Pam Solinski put in four of the Knights 10 points in the third period to give her team a six point lead over their opponents.
