PAGE TWELVE Braves hold first Beaumont Braves took over sole possession of top place in the Majors Division of the Bob Horlacher = Memorial Little League by nosing out the Orange Yankees, 13 to 11, for their ninth win in 10 starts. The loss, the second of the season for the Yanks, dropped the Orange team into second place with an 8-2 record. Ernie Wright was the winning hurler for the Braves and had good support from his team- mates, Dean Detrick and Roger Bellas. Detrick came up with a decisive triple while Bellas’ two doubles aided greatly in the scoring. In other Major Division games, Noxen defeated Centermoreland, 11 to 5, behind Bob Rogers’ hurling, and the Beaumont Giants came up with their third win of the season, beating Kunkle, behind Gerry Congdon’s pitching. On Tuesday (May 27) easy time of it in beating the Beaumont Giants, 25 to 7, behind Dave Hislop’s pitching. Hislop had eight strikeouts in four and one third innings of relief hurling. Tim Dymond hit a grandslammer for the Orange nine. Noxen loses Centermoreland kept its slate clean by beating Noxen, 46 to 37, to retain the top spot in the Tee Ball division of the Bob Horlacher Memorial Little League in one of two games played Saturday. The win was the fourth in as many starts for the Centermoreland squad. In the other contest in the Tee Ball Division on Saturday, the Orange Orioles came out on top, 37-34, in their game against Beaumont. Standings of the teams through Saturday: Centermoreland, 4-0, 1,000; Orange, 3-1, .750; Noxen, 2-2, .500; Beaumont, 1-3, .250, and Kunkle, 0-4, .000. Kunkle’s Indians and the Orange Yankees continue their merry chase for honors in the Teeners Division of the Bob Horlacher Memorial Little League with two victories each in games last week. Kunkle had a field day last Wednesday against the Beaumont-Jenks nine, with Rusty Baer getting the mound win that saw Brian Oeller of the Kunkle squad go on a batting rampage with an inside the park homerun; two triples, a double and two singles. Other ‘big guns’ for Kunkle were Kevin Schultz with a six- for-six day, including two doubles, and B. Young hitting four-for-four. Saturday was a dif- ferent story, however, for the Indians as they were forced all the way by the Centermoreland Phillies, coming out on top with a 6 to 5 win over the Phillies, thanks to Brian Oeller’s pitching and batting--he hit a three-run homer besides turning in a Centermoreland Phi- llies kept their slate clean and chalked up their fifth win in as many starts in the Minors Division of the Bob Horlacher Memorial Little League when the Phillies smothered the Orange Yankees, 37 to 11, in one of three games played Saturday. In other games on Saturday, Beaumont squeaked to a 25 to 24 win over the Orange Orioles and Kunkle Pirates lambasted Noxen, 28 to 11. Last Tuesday (May 27) Orange Orioles beat the Kunkle Indians, 28-18, and on Thursday Beaumont socred a 27-11 triumph over Noxen. Yanks beat the Phillies, 19 to 11, to remain tied for loop honors on Wednesday as Tessie Baseski came up with another mound win for Orange. Greg Kravitsky and Ed Coolbaugh homered for the winners. In Saturday’s game, Yankees scored an easy 21-9 decision over the Beaumont-Jenks nine as Joe Patts, the winning hurler, helped his cause with a good day at bat, knocking in three runs.
