by Lee L. Richards Delighted to hear Brian Sickler, former Dallas High athlete, is doing so well at Washington State. He’s about ‘ready to embark on his final spring football practice for the Pac Ten school. The coaches have informed Brian he’s going to receive playing time at both fullback and outside linebacker. He's a tough and durable blocker, but the staff feels they want to take advantage of his natural instincts and -aggressiveness, thus he’ll shift over to the defense for a good looksee. Several weeks again ago he won a contest on campus style on the West Coast and is glad he made the change from Miami, Fla., to finish up his college career. He's quite a fan of head coach Jim Walden and believes very strongly in the Cougars’ program. Since this is his final season, he’s looking forward to getting more playing time at either side of the football. If the Cougars can muster up some help on defense, they could post a winning season. Of course they’ve got some tough foes to beat, especially an early season trip down to Knoxville which will be quite an experience. Fans on the West Coast aren’t as fanatical as those in the SEC where football is more like a way of life. Meanwhile, did you happen to check out the recent All- State roundball team and see the name Dwight Collins listed on the second unit? He's the All-American running back slated to play football for the Pitt Panthers in the fall. He’s some kind of athlete from all reports I've heard. Lake-Lehman’s volleyball team is racking up the victories again. The Knights have really taken to that sport and their recent success didn’t come by accident. They've just got some pretty talented folks. The Stanley Cup playoffs begin this week and it seems to me there’s a lack of interest compared to previous years. Flyers wound up with the best record, but I'm a bit leary ‘about their intensity in recent weeks. Boy the Rangers sure got some fat-heads after their success last year. Couldn’t handle the prosperity! Look for King’s and Wilkes to have very competitive golf teams again this spring. It’s always a shame to see the young men rounding their games into tip-top shape and the season is over. Hope the weather is better this spring than last. The Masters Golf Tournament is this weekend and I'm always enthralled just looking at the beauty of some of the holes. I'd sure like to tee it up and chase the little ding champ. I wonder if he’ll make the cut this time with all of the pressure he'll be under? J Three cheers for Detroit manager Spark Anderson for" laying down the law to Mark Fidrych to either put up or ‘Dancing hippo’ notes Back Mountain Memorial Library has a display in Besecker’s National Library Week and publicizes the local library’s poster contest. Posters will be distributed to the classes of students from Dallas Elementary School who come to the library during the week. The posters are Dallas, in observance of National Library Week, April 13 to April 19. A dancing hip- popotamus proclaims the Call us. 824-8211 Since 1928 shut up. Seems ‘The Bird’’ didn’t appreciate Anderson sending him to the Minors until he proved his arm was 100 percent. He’s been flapping around for two years and collecting his check, but hasn’t contributed to the team. Sparky told him things are going to be run his way now. Maybe more baseball managers should rule with unquestioned authority and we’d have a saner game. Philly scribes are starting to pump out glowing goodies about the 76ers again, but aren’t they a team that has out more IOUs than Bert Lance? Speaking of the NBA, I was a bit under the weather Sunday and tuned in some of the twin-bill. Please forgive me because I can’t stomach watching the inconsistent calls by the stripe-shirts, the extra steps which aren’t called and the lack of team play. What I can’t understand is why the Philly five doesn’t give the ball to Dr. J more when things are close and let him solo? He’s really ex- ceptional. Some of the teams with weak rebounders sure do take poor shots. I couldn’t take a steady diet of the NBA. It’s about as exciting as Roller Derby. What’s this bunk about the Draft Doger making a comeback? I thought he called it quits at least six times? There’s no-way he wants any part of Larry Holmes. Right now the best fighter in the game is Sugar Ray Leonard. He sure did put a big hurt on that dude from England last week. I took a couple of bufferin myself. What quickness in his punches. He's close to being compared to Sugar Ray Robinson, the best in my book. --Bedwick & Jones Printers have put out a nifty calendar for the coming local golf tournaments. They have some classy colored shots of the area’s courses, too. If you have to pin-point the blame on any one group for the problems in baseball, put it right to the owners for tossing around all the big bucks. They've created the whole mess. I don’t have any sympathy for them or the players. I read where Gene Autry wants to cancel the whole season. That sure would bring some of the big- heads down to size. a One of my Eastern football contacts informed me recently a pro scout stopped at his university to check out some upcoming talent. He informed him he was going to Pitt to look over the Panthers next. He said several scouting combines have listed 17 Panthers as potential prospects. That's a heap. New York Jets will have two first round draft choices which should bolster them. Coach Walt Michaels has been quite successful in the recent drafts. Big question out of Dallas is can Danny White be as productive as Roger Stauback was at QB? I'm confident White will play the position with a winning style. He’s a solid all-around athlete. I remember when he played at Arizona State. I hope Cowboy fans will be patient. Roger hasn’t been gone a week and already the Eagles are talking about winning the division. If they could only play up to the level they talk they would be in the Super Bowl. Library Week here the by the Library Association to the students with the winning posters. The highlight of the event will be a 14.7 Kilometer Run around Harveys Lake and the run is expected to attract well over 700 runners. Immediately after the conclusion of the 14.7 run, prizes and awards will be given at a family outing which will be held at Hanson’s Amusement Park at Harveys Lake. Are you getting your share of this 77 billion dollars? If not, you are throwing away your money at the checkout counter instead of cashing in on the profitable hobby of refunding. If a supermarket in your area gives double cents-off days you can easily double your savings at the checkout stand. One supermarket in Houston tried to increase their business on their “slow’’ days by trying ‘‘double cents-off days’ and quadrupled their business. The program was so successful that they continued ‘‘double days” EVERY day. Rules on using cents-off at your supermarket are very simple. 1) Check the expiration date, if it is expired, throw it away. A helpful hint is to circle the date in red so it will be easy to spot and save time at the checkout. 2) Use cents-off coupons ONLY on the product specified on the coupon. Do not embarrass yourself by attempting to ask the clerk to accept a cents-off for a different product than listed on the form. It is against the law and considered fraud! i 3) Give the proper coupons to the checkout clerk after you have umpteen bags of groceries already bagged. Put yourself in their place and be extra courteous. 4) Figure out how much you saved, try it for a month or two and see if you are becoming a ‘‘Smart Shopper’. Here are some offers to try.
