Manny Gordon, former district forester, addressed the seventh grade on the topic of conservation and ecology. The assembly, planned by science teachers Francis Kopko and Paul Warchal, came as the classes completed their study of trees of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Many seventh graders have, in completing this unit, compiled ad- mirable collections of leaves from local plants and have become the school’s resident experts on tree iden- tification. . While the students enjoyed a much-needed Indian Summer weekend with a day off Friday, teachers held their first full day in-service. Many of the programs planned by department chairmen took the faculty to local school districts and colleges to view new programs, methods, and materials in action. Others remained in Dallas to further develop programs of their own. Students in the eighth grade were given the op- portunity to demonstrate their academic achievement last week. N.E.D.T. tests were administered to all students in grade eight and to seventh and ninth grade students on a voluntary basis, Last week’s lunches in the Dallas School District were part of the National School Lunch Week program. Junior High students and staff take this opportunity to salute the cafeteria staff on their patient and efficient service throughout the year. : Remember, parents: this Friday night is the first student council dance of the school year. The dance will be a costume dance. No masks will be permitted, however. Students preferring to come in regular attire will be asked to pay a slight additional charge. Prizes will be awarded for the best costume in each of several categories. In addition to the usual faculty and staff chaperones, several parents will be present to supervise. * This week's sports news highlights Cameron Spivey, the only freshman on the first string Dallas varsity golf team. His six foot putt on the 18th hole helped Dallas tie Nanticoke in district playoffs. On the football scene, the junior Mounts romped over Hanover with a score of 30-12. Quarterback Steve Matt Moran and Greg Kravitsky scored on runs. The defense was also exceptional behind the hard-hitting John Shemo and Jerry Rollman. Ray Piekanski managed three pass interceptions to aid the Dallas win. With Halloween approaching, the Junior High art department is decorating halls, walls and windows in the spirit of the season. If you visit the school this week, take note of the seasonal displays designed by this year’s art classes. With wishes for a safe and sensible Halloween, that’s all for now from Dallas Junior High.
