The president stated the guild would be making donuts on Saturday, March 31. Anyone desiring in helping please notify chair- person Shirley McDonald. ' Betty Dawd reported on the success of the St. Patrick's Day Dance. The guild's yearly Father-Son basketball game will be ‘held Friday, March 30 at 8:00 p.m. in the school gym. The ‘‘Gate of Heaven School Awards Night’’ will be held on Sunday, May 20. ‘Scholastic and athletic awards will be presented to qualifying participants in . grades four through eight. Rev. William F. Barbara Strazdus reported on the Casino Royale featuring ‘A Night at the Races’, which will be held on April 27 and 28 in the school gym. She stated sale of horses must be in by April 1 and ticket returns on April 15. Donation is $2.00 which includes beverages, pretzels and chips. Mary Ann Thompson reported the Wine and Cheese party will be held on April 18. The program for March was a presentation on ‘Fhe Book of Daniel.” It was given by Ms. Amelia Yarmels sixth grade class. Denmon, Jr., ) has been named chairman of the Second Annual Dinner Dance, sponsored by the Harveys Lake Republican Organization. Fire Hall. Tickets may be pur- chased by contacting Becky Casterline, William Hoblak, Calvin McHose or Andrew Denmon, Jr. At the age when people are looking forward to taking it easy and doing things for themselves, Ama DeGraw of Cen- termoreland is doing just the opposite. Ama, wife of Kenneth DeGraw, recently celebrated her 60th bir- thday. Just before her birthday she received the Silver Beaver Award- highest adult honor in Boy Scouting-for her 18 years of volunteer service in the Boy ‘Scout program. Ama started 18 years ago as Den Mother for Cub Scout Pack 336. Her husband, also active in Boy Scouting for the past 18 years, received the Silver Beaver Award 10 years ago. He is presently cubmaster and leader of the Webelos in Cen- termoreland. He was a scout master for 12 years. The beaver award is given in recognition of outstanding service in scouting, church, com- munity and country. Ama is one of only a few women to receive the award. Until three years ago, Ama worked for Valley Fashions where she was employed for 21 years. Due to major surgery, a heart attack, and leukemia she was forced to retire. Although totally disabled, Ama refused to give up her favorite work-scouting. «She not only is associated with boy scouting but also is the leader of two Girl Scout troops. Ama has Junior Troop 263 with 28 girls and Cadette Troop 500 with seven members. According to Ama, her success is due to her capable assistants, in the junior troop, Peggy Blee and Gloria Rought, both of whom have daughters in the troop; and in Cadettes, Lois Button and Connie Bolecarvic, who have daughters in the troop. She has had the troops for 10 years and at one time had a senior patrol with the Cadette Troops. The DeGraws have no children of their own and Ama was never in Girl Scouting. She was enrolled as a volunteer by a professional member of the Girl Scout Council. The former Ama Sutton, and a native of Pittson, she has resided in Cen- termoreland for the past 50 years. She graduated from Dallas Borough High when Cen- termoreland students could go to either the borough or township and paid their own tuition. Her husband is a native of '. Cen- termoreland. For 10 years Ama was secretary of the Franklin- Northmoreland Township Ambulance Association. She presently is the Wyoming Valley Crippled Children’s Association will sponsor the Easter egg hunt for children receiving treat- ment at the Association. Ravert of has been ‘selected for training as a at the Defense Language Institute at the Presidio of Monterey, Calif. The airman recently completed basic training at Lackland AFB, Tex., and studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special instruction in human relations. = Com- pletion of this training earned the individual credits towards an associate. in applied science degree through the Air Force. Airman Ravert, a 1973 graduate of Lake-Lehman (Pa.) high school, received a B.S. degree in accounting University at University Park. troop gave her a necklace engraved with the date she received the beaver award and her Cub Scouts en- couraged by her cub scout assistant Geraldine Wall, gave her a Boy Scout stick- pin. Ama DeGraw is reaching retirement age and is physically disabled but neither stop her from doing what she loves best - working in scouting and enjoying politics. She says they are her best medicine. Chairperson needs Back Mt. Volun teers The Luzerne County unit of the American Cancer Society must meet its 1979 Cancer crusade goal of $86,000 by August 31. To date, the crusade total for the local unit stands at $22,000. Mrs. Joan Pisaneschi, residential chairman in the Back Mountain area, needs help. The weekly meeting of the Back Mountain Kiwanis Club was held on Saturday, March 24, at the Mark II Restaurant, Dallas. Joe McDonald presided. Visiting guests attending the meeting were C.M. Laidler, Dennis Garvey, and Granny Miller, all members of the Wilkes- Barre Kiwanis Club. Also present were Reese Pelton, and Ray Hillman, both members of the Dallas Kiwanis Club. Pamela and Gregory Evans, both members of the Lake- Lehman Key Club, were also present at the meeting. Special guest speaker was Keith Martin anchor man for WBRE TV, Channel 28, Wilkes-Barre. During this past weekend Back Mountain Kiwanis Club Secretary Jim Snyder attended a District Circle K meeting held in Altoona. In the past week, the Back Mountain Kiwanis Club were in attendance at five Inter-clubs. On Tuesday, March 20 they were in Carbondale, at- tending the Carbondale Kiwanis Club with four members present. On Wednesday March 21, they were at the Swoyersville Kiwanis Club, with four members present; also on that same night they were at the Dallas Kiwanis, with four members present; and then to top off the night of Inter-clubbing, they were present at the Fall Fair meeting held at the Irem- Temple Country Club, Dallas, with eight mem- bers present. This gave the Club a total of four Inter- clubs in one night. On Wednesday night March 21° Whitey Porasky attended the monthly meeting of the Back Mountain Couincil on Drug and Alcohol Abuse, held at the Irem Temple Country Club, Dallas.
