At the age when people
are looking forward to
taking it easy and doing
things for themselves, Ama
DeGraw of Cen-
termoreland is doing just
the opposite.
Ama, wife of Kenneth
DeGraw, recently
celebrated her 60th bir-
thday. Just before her
birthday she received the
Silver Beaver Award-
highest adult honor in Boy
Scouting-for her 18 years of
volunteer service in the
Boy ‘Scout program. Ama
started 18 years ago as Den
Mother for Cub Scout Pack
336. Her husband, also
active in Boy Scouting for
the past 18 years, received
the Silver Beaver Award 10
years ago. He is presently
cubmaster and leader of
the Webelos in Cen-
termoreland. He was a
scout master for 12 years.
The beaver award is
given in recognition of
outstanding service in
scouting, church, com-
munity and country. Ama
is one of only a few women
to receive the award.
Until three years ago,
Ama worked for Valley
Fashions where she was
employed for 21 years. Due
to major surgery, a heart
attack, and leukemia she
was forced to retire.
Although totally disabled,
Ama refused to give up her
favorite work-scouting.
«She not only is associated
with boy scouting but also
is the leader of two Girl
Scout troops. Ama has
Junior Troop 263 with 28
girls and Cadette Troop 500
with seven members.
According to Ama, her
success is due to her
capable assistants, in the
junior troop, Peggy Blee
and Gloria Rought, both of
whom have daughters in
the troop; and in Cadettes,
Lois Button and Connie
Bolecarvic, who have
daughters in the troop.
She has had the troops
for 10 years and at one time
had a senior patrol with the
Cadette Troops.
The DeGraws have no
children of their own and
Ama was never in Girl
Scouting. She was enrolled
as a volunteer by a
professional member of the
Girl Scout Council.
The former Ama Sutton,
and a native of Pittson, she
has resided in Cen-
termoreland for the past 50
years. She graduated from
Dallas Borough High
when Cen-
termoreland students could
go to either the borough or
township and paid their
own tuition. Her husband is
a native of '. Cen-
termoreland.
For 10 years Ama was
secretary of the Franklin-
Northmoreland Township
Ambulance Association.
She presently is
the Wyoming Valley
Crippled Children’s
Association will sponsor
the Easter egg hunt for
children receiving treat-
