——_—_—_—_— ‘GROSSMAN by Howard J. Grossman Northeastern Pennsylvania has a bad habit. There is a tendency to undercut and become quite negative about the future of this region. The trend is to be negative about the region’s problems and to underestimate and down play the region’s assests. Yet, when an examination is made of Northeastern Pennsylvania's assets, a long list can be compiled which would enable citizens and officials alike to market the region in such a way as fo attract appropriate economic development. The problem has been to marshall all of the forces necessary to market the region’s assests. The conflicts and cleavages which predominate tend to split the region into many parts and to lose the effectiveness of a cohesive regional asset program. In a recent evaluation of the region’s assets, 14 key factors were listed by the Economic Development Council of Northeastern Pennsylvania which enables Northeastern Pennsylvania to have an optimistic outlook concerning its long range future. While the list may be incomplete, it does represent, perhaps for the first time, a combination of factors which should be fully marketed as a basis for by The Rev. Charles H. Gilbert To my mind it seems that the great Pharasaic teacher described in the third chapter of John was much nearer to the kingdom of life than he himself realized. He had come to the point of needing to know the secret of the kingdom. But when Jesus gave him his now Christian Nicodemus was not ready to go that far. Jesus had answered his request for help in a deep and far- sighted clue to the new life movement. Nicodemus at once grasped the depth of the challenge. It might be necessary indeed for a man who was ‘‘old’’ to see the path along its literal leadings. He was apparently an old man and had already found some of the difficulties in the learning procedures. I wonder if Nicodemus did actually discover some new techniques in the more of us have seen what the real ONLY YESTERDAY = The movement to include the paving of Main and Bennett Streets, Luzerne, in any program for the construction of the long-awaited by-pass enlisted new support this week as Luzerne business men pressed home concessions several weeks ago. I await the answer! I have found that one good help in learning Greek is definitely to memorize the Greek text itself so that it comes readily to mind as one studies the few words involved. I have done more memorizing Greek sentences than I have done with English for some time. I look up. a verse in the Greek of something I want to have in my memory and before I am hardly aware of the fact, I know that text in Greek and quite a bit more than the mere words as well. Memorizing selections of poetry and but they are evidently doing it again, at least in some places. Saturday, we took three members of Cathy’s choir with us to sing along with some of her flower pictures at a meeting of some “older adults”. On the way up and back in the car, the one in the front seat was practicing a famous poem she had to know for a test Monday? Cdthy did some prompting but had to sing it to herself first! She had learned it as a song, and says music helps in ‘memorizing the words. When anybody balks at memorizing a song, she say, ‘If you memorize it now, it belongs to you, so you can sing it even if you get so you can’t read, or don’t have the book anymore.” The girls did have their books with them at the program, but on the way up and back they were singing some of the same songs (any many others) in the dark. / Keeping a storehouse of good things in your memory is a help. But putting new things in the storehouse is also necessary. Nicodemus must have had a good supply, but he evidently realized himself that something was missing, or he wouldn’t have risked going to ask Jesus about it, even though he couldn’t quite understand the answer he received. Look if you will at another individual confrontation of the way and method to eternal life. The ‘rich young ruler” asked his question and got his answer in literal terms. What if evangelists went about asking some of their converts to the ‘born again” philosophy, “Yes, born again, but have you sold out all you had of material riches? If you have done that>you are ready to follow Jesus too!” One approdeh is about as easy as the other. Add all-the “born again” Christians to the ‘‘sell“all that thou hast” Christians and you can weally get somewhere in Christian progress. Jesus didn’t tell Nicodemus to sell anything! And he didn’t say a word to the rich young ruler about being born again! He spoke to each one about what he saw as that man’s special need, and neither one really understood all that he meant! It takes more than a mere answer to a slogan test to be a Christian. =~ Sweet Valley prepares for biggest crowd as groups continue to enter the Memorial Day parade.
