1 by Bridgette Correale 639-5759 Now what would you think if you were the Correale milkman and found them asleep in their driveway, in Father McGough’s mini-bighy- You would probably think (bey were partying again and scouldn’t make the steps. At 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, my husband Vince, Bill Downs and myself began collecting the 13 tourists who were going to Italy. This tour, which was sponsored by Gate of Heaven Parish, reserved three Pan American 707 jets. I accompan- ied Bill and six tourists in his roomy mini-bus. There I was in my new pantsuit, sitting on a bean bag amongst the various luggage. Vin followed in Father McGough’s mini-bus with seven other passengers: At 5 o’clock, after bon voyages, arrividercis’ and kisses, we were off to Phila- delphia to meet the plane that was scheduled to depart at 10:30. We: were making. beautiful time and everyone was in a jo- vial mood, until we reached the Schuylkill Extressway. The next two hours were spent bumper to bumper in the rain trying to exit. Fortunately, Bill knows Philly so we were able to travel through the city. About 20 minutes from the airport we were told to detour once, detour License Fees Increased For Anberess Deer Gov. The roads around the airport were flooded, the bridge was closed and thousands of people were either stuck in knee-deep water, traveling in circles or were in- volved in accidents. After the police detoured us a fourth time, we asked a fellow who was standing by a road on the outskirts of the swampland that surrounds the airport, if it led to the airport. He said, “Yes, make a right and two lefts.”” After making the second left we soon realized it was a “set-up.”” A group of teenagere were ready to jump our bus, but with two experienced city boys driving, we managed to frighten them and ourselves. That wasn’t all, we went one way and the other bus went another. After five minutes, which seemed like an eternity, we managed to exit right on the airport. We waited for the other bus and nothing happened, so we went back in the swamp to find it, but no dice. I was begin- ning to panic because I kept pic- turing those horrible boys who were up to no good. After a while we decided to go to the airport, deposit the passengers, and then come back with the police, Army or Mafia! - We reached the main building only to be told that we had to go to the overseas terminal that was surrounded by knee-deep water. At this point it was pour- ing rain, the traffic was stand- ing still and the water was get- ting deeper. Needless to say we were all upset, so we decided to streteh our legs in the domestic terminal and try to phone the Pan American Airline. After a half hour of accomplishing no- thing, we were told there would be a shuttle bus to take the pas- sengers to the overseas ter- minal. We parked our bus, load- ed the luggage onto the shuttle, squeezed our way on, and off we go on to the runway. Now how do you explain to Saint Peter that you were run over by a 747 jet? There were planes all around us, taxiing to {ake off and there we were right smack in the middle. With a lot of prayers and sweat we reach- ed the terminal. Rounded up our six passengers and luggage and beganto walk tothe Pan'Ameri- can section. We figured the flight had taken off, because planes were taking off. Fortunately only seven people had arrived for the 10:30 flight, so the airlines post- poned the flight until 4:30 a.m.. By the way, who do you think the other seven were, yes—the other mini-busful. The ed, but somehow we managed to leave the city. There it was 3 o'clock and we were looking for a nice restuarant to order lob- ster or steak. We ended up with scrambled eggs, home fries and chocolate pudding. What luck! How did we end up sleeping in the mini-bus? At 5:30 in the morning, we found we had for- gotten our housekeys and everyone was asleep, so we de- cided to ‘‘sack out.” I was so ex- hausted it didn’t matter whether I had on my beautiful pantsuit or my ‘pj’s.”’ I just wonder if our group will find sunny Italy as adventurous as Philadelphia.
