Page 14 Artist, sculptor, designer, “craftsman - no matter the name, it all adds up to the fact that Edward Friar, Ferguson “Avenue, Shavertown, is a proficient practitioner of a fine ~ art cutting, setting and in- stalling marble, glass and tiles. Samples ‘of his beautifully designed workmanship is evident in many homes and buildings locally and through- out the country, and Edward Friar is engaged in an in- dustrial art which is the reali- zation of a dream he had while . still a‘ young boy in the ele- mentary grades in Parsons. Born in Larksville and moving with his parents to Parsons he attended the Wilkes- Barre area schools until he was 16 years of age when he with- drew from- Coughlin’ High School to serve as a marble apprentice for four years with the former United Marble & Tile Co. He learned to set, cut and install ‘marble appoint- ments in schools, churches, and other large buildings through- out the United States and * became proficient in ereating “original and beautiful designs. Following his four years apprenticeship, he became a journeyman with the same company remaining in‘ their employ until 1942 when he was drafted into the U. S. Army where he served for three years. A member of the 3rd Division, 7th Infantry, he was stationed in Africa and Sicily. About one ~ month after the invasion he was wounded in Sicily and spent three months in a hospital in ‘North Africa before he was returned to Fort Dix, N.J. Discharged from the hospital - in 1945, Edward Friar returned “to Wyoming Valley and ac- cepted a position with Pitt sburgh Plate Glass Co. for a short time until he and George Germick went into business in Luzerne where they operated - for about 12 years. ~~ In 1947'he married the former Kathryn Raber of Hanover ~ Township and the couple lived in Parsons until 1951 when they _ decided to move to the Back “enjoy fresh air, space, and the distance of the city. munity. in Luzerne where daughter, Erin, age two. Although responsibilities limit the amount of time he can devote to other organizations, he has been able to maintain membership in the Parsons V.F.W., where he is a charter member; American Legion; Shavertown Volunteer Fire Co.; Harveys East Lemon Rod and Gun Club. He and his wife are active members of St. Therese’s Church, Shavertown, where Ed is a member of the men’s Holy the Altar & Rosary Society. Gardening is his major avocation and each year he plants a large plot of ground which provides plenty of vegetable for table use throughout the summer as well as sufficent amounts for freezing or canning by his wife and daughter-in-law for the winter months. Mrs. Friar enjoys her work in the kitchen for she is a culinary ‘pro’ and, among other things, assists her husband in making sausage and kielbasi as well as sauerkraut for their favorite dish - pork and sauerkraut. Ed is a hunting enthusiast and had his first experience in small game hunting in 1930. He was taken to the fields and woods for deer for the past 30 years and made several trips to Newfoundland, moose hunting; and to North Carolina for geese.
