Sue and Paul Schalm and Rosemary and Richard Caputo entertained a group for cocktails and buffet at the Westmoreland Club. This was one of the first major parties held at the Westmore- land Club since the flood. For the occasion the club house was beautifully decorated with green ferns and spring flowers and a string quartet entertained their guests in the mood of the evening. On Sutton Road two dinner parties preceded the concert. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Maslow entertained 12 guests for dinner at their home, and Mr. and Mrs. William Umphred invited 12 for cocktails and buffet. Dr. and Mrs. Clint Lehman of Orchard View Terrace, Dallas, and Dr. and Mrs. Ronald Kresge of Pinecrest Avenue, Dallas, entertained other small groups of Philharmonic patrons for dinner at their respective homes. Mr. and Mrs. James Veras of Sutton Road have returned from a wonderful vacation in the Southwest. Their first stop was Houston, Texas, where Jim attended the Home Builders Association Convention at Astro Hall next door to the Astro Dome. Then they spent some time at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles and visited friends in Tucson, Ariz., on their way home. Mr. and Mrs. Claude Newhart of Chase Road have retuned from Jacksonville, Fla., where they spent six weeks with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John Zayatz. While they were there, they attended the wedding of their grand- daughter, Joanne Zayatz; cele- brated Mrs. Newhart’s birthday Dec. 11; and greeted the arrival of their ninth great-grandchild, the daughter of Shirley Zayatz Bon. So this was an especially exciting vacation for Claude and Ida. January is a popular month for birthdays. Doreen Askew was the guest of honor at a birthday party Jan. 17 given by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cory Askew at their home on Chase Road. Her guests included Tammy Sayre, Becky Cars- man, Kim and Susan Burke, Ray-Ann and Lee-Ann Malak, Paige Belasco, Laurie Angel- icola, Lynn Newberry, Wayne and Curt Lamoreaux, Danny Askew, and Eileen and Elaine Cigarski. This was Doreen’s eighth birthday. Another birthday party was given Jan. 20 by Mr. and Mrs. William Evans of Overbrook Avenue to celebrate the sixth birthday of their son, John. His guests were Francis Umphred, Douglas Maslow, Gerry Gun- ster, Corey Wagner, Nathan Popky, P.J. Schalm, and Bobby Durkin. After refreshments and games, the youngsters were taken to see the Courage of Lassie. Taylor Ruggles was un- able to attend as he had under- gone a tonsilectomy on Friday. Best wishes are extended to Bruce Scott Kirshner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Kirshner, 91 Mary St., Shavertown, whose engagement to Marcy Lee Druker of Dresher was an- nounced recently. Mr. Kirshner is a graduate of Meyers High School and Temple University and is attending the Pennsyl- vania College of Optometry. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Gerstein, Wilkes-Barre, and the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Kirshner, Plains. James W. Pichert son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter J. Pichert, has been enrolled in a project at Bucknell University entitled “Creation of Activity Materials for Isolated Children.” Mr. Pichert is a junior at the univer- sity. He is a graduate of Dallas Senior High School. The junior and senior high Shavertown United Methodist Church entertained the junior high group of Firwood Methodist Church last Sunday at 6:30 p.m in the social rooms of the church. Following a sandwich supper, the senior high group attended the . Christian Unity Service at Gate of Heaven Church, Dallas. The Rev. Edward Singer, district superintendent of United Methodist Churches was guest speaker. Mr. and Mrs. William Camp are counselors of the senior group and Mrs. Joseph Allen and Mrs. John Rogers are working with the junior high group. Linda Phillips, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Phillips, 158 Center Ave. left Saturday to attend the Music Educator’s National Convention in Boston, Mass. Miss Phillips will enter her second semester of study Feb. 5 at Wilkes College where she is pursuing a major in music education. Her primary field of study is in voice and piano. Mr. and Mrs. Edward Friar, 287 Ferguson Ave., Shavertown, will spend the weekend with Mr. Friar’s brother and sister-in- law, Mr. and Mrs. Casey Friar, Levittown. Confirmation classes for young people of Shavertown United Methodist Church will begin Feb. 4, 3:30 p.m. in the chapel room. Classes will be conducted for 10 consecutive weeks. Their son, Francis, was chosen by Jeff Grant, the producer of Children’s Story Hour to parti- cipate in the series which will be aired on Channel 44 beginning in February. Francis is a student of the Payne-Pettebone Kinder- garten of Wyoming Seminary Day School so the autograph hounds will just have to wait until he can write his name a little faster. Invitations have been issued to members of the Jackson Township Firemen’s Associa- tion and the Women’s Auxiliary, for a dinner and dance Jan. 27 at the firehall. Dale Wright and Gary Cooper are co-chairmen in charge of arrangements. The festivities will begin at 6:30. Both modern and square dancing will be enjoyed. Red Jones is the square dance caller. Silver Leaf Makes Church Donation The Kunkle Silver Leaf Club met at the home of Jennie Miers Jan. 16.
