rv Penn State’s Wilkes-Barre Campus welcomed more than 400 freshmen and upperclass- men during last week’s orien- tation activities. The opening of the fall semester marked the fifth year of operation at the local campus in Lehman. Prior to 1968, the campus was located in Wilkes-Barre where it had offered higher education since 1916. The two-year associate de- gree program was introduced in Lehman site, baccalaureate courses were gradually intro- duced with students now being able to complete two years of baccalaureate work before changing assignment or moving ‘to another campus. This year’s orientation program was organized and ad- ministered by members of the student government association and the college’s counseling staff and gave new students an opportunity to become familiar with ‘campus policies, faculty and new staff members, fac- ilities, curriculum and activi- ties. Students were welcomed by student government association President Russell Gula, campus Director George W. Bierly, and Dean of Students John R. Murphy. Incoming freshmen and upperclassmen joined dis- cussion groups and offered con- structive comments and suggestions about academic programs, activities, and student life on the Lehman campus. Marathon couples began dancing at 6 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday to the live 70 sounds of WEEK, WLRN, and WAEB radio and to various Lehigh Valley bands. Unlike the 1920 marathoners who competed for prizes of several thousand dollars, these dancers competed for new books. Scores of Lehigh. and Wyoming valley residents have pledged various amounts to the flood-devastated libraries of Wilkes and Kings colleges for each hour danced by parti- cipating couples. The benefit, the first in a series for the college libraries fund, was sponsored by H.B. Signal of Signal's Stores, Easton, Allentown and Wilkes- Barre. Arthur Tron of Tron’s Catering, Guy Bartolacci’s Food Lanes, Mohican Markets donated food for marathon participants while the Fountain Hill Ambulance Corp. stood-by in event of dancing fatigue as experienced by even pro- fessional marathoners with the exception of Mary ‘‘Hercules Promitis. Miss Promitis, the winner of a 21-day marathon at Madison Square in 1923, had a secret. She learned that bare-fistgeafighters pickled their hands # so she soaked her feet in brine and vinegar for three weeks prior to the marathon. So successful was the method that when the New York health commissioner finally ended the dance, after three weeks, Mary was still feeling no pain. tn 38° > PRICES EFFECTIVE THRU SAT., SEPT. 30, '72 100 Home Grown Sweet CORN BIRDS EYE (Save up to 10¢c) COOL WHIP OR ORANGE PLUS 9-0z.
