Nagle, 21, of Lily Lake, had passed another car at high speed on his way home from Harveys Lake, before hitting the tree across Main Street from the Willard New- berry development. Nagle was admitted to Nesbitt Hospital by ambulance. Passenger Jim Leary of Kingston was treated and discharged. Both young men suffered lacerations and contusions. photo by Scott Saffian: ‘No comment’ on suspension says police chief Lange Dallas Township Police Of- ficer Jim Davies is back on the job- following a two-week sus- pension without pay. Officer Davies, formerly a policeman in Dallas Borough, was suspended because of a mix-up over who had jurisdic- tion of a pistol being safe- guarded for a woman involved in an auto accident. Although Officer Davies was suspended, he was not given a hearing or told what the sus- pension was for. Police Chief Frank Lange said he had no comment to make regarding the story. “A lot of big people told me to just forget it.” When pressed to give his version, Chief Lange said only that ‘“The people know what it is all about.” Neither Chief Lange nor Fred Lamoreaux, chairman of Dallas Township supervisors, confronted Officer Davies with the suspension. Instead, he was informed by a fellow officer, Charles Finn. According to Officer Davies, the pistol was found in an auto belonging to a Mrs. Howard McCern, Benton RD 1, who re- portedly ran off the road to avoid an accident in Dallas Borough May 16. That accident was one in which Mrs. Elizabeth Ross of Dallas Township lost her life on Route 118 at East Center Hill Road near the American Legion. Dallas Township Police Chief Lange assisted Dallas Borough police officer Ray Titus at the accident and in the process dis- covered the snub-nosed 32 cali- ber pistol in the McCern auto. He told Mrs. McCern that he would take the pistol to the Dallas Township police station for safekeeping. At the same time, Officer . Ray Titus, unaware of the pis- tol, had gathered up the wo- man’s personal belongings, in- cluding papers and a stereo and tapes, and stored them in the Dallas Borough police sta- tion. Later, in the course of in- vestigating the cause of the ac- cident, Officer Titus visited Of- ficer Davies at Dallas Town- ship and was informed that the pistol was in a filing cabi- net there. Officer Davies said that he suggested Officer Titus take the pistol and put it with the other property of Mrs. McCern. Of- ficer Davies said he was also concerned that the pistol was untagged and could have been stolen from the station’s filing cabinet. Officer Titus said that he - took the pistol with him to his home, a practice of the depart- ment as the storage cabinet at Dallas Borough could easily be broken into. Chief Lange, when he dis- covered the pistol missing, in- formed Officer Davies to get it back or face the possibility of losing his job, Officer Davies said. The pistol was retrieved and returned to Chief Lange who re- turned it to Mrs. McCern. Officer Davies was sum- marily suspended for two weeks without pay. He said that he sought as- sistance from the Back Moun- tain Police Association but was informed that the matter was departmental and should be handled as such.
