SECTION B — PAGE 6 _ Commonwealth Telephone Co. These Are Special Blueberry Muffins To Change To All-Number Calling “On October 5, 1964 the Harveys! ~ Lake exchange of the Common- wealth Telephone Company will be converted to All-Number Calling |“ with each telephone number being composed of seven digits,” J. N. Landis, District Manager, announced today. ‘Direct Distance Dialing will also be inaugurated at that time,” Landis added. Landis announced that the new seven-digit telephone numbers will be listed in the Dallas directory, ‘which will be delivered several days before the numbers are placed in service. Number cards will be forwarded to all customers for them to place on all telephones prior to the change-over. Landis emphasiz- ed that this change is being made to keep pace with the growing de- mands for telephone service. Until now, 2-5 numberings was employed to allow an exchange's participation in the nationwide toll network. Under this plan, ex- changes were given exchange name designations such as NEptune plus a five-digit number. The number, when dialed, would call for dialing NE and the five digits. ~ “With the. change in October, the numbers will have seven digits. The first three numbers,” Landis said, “will be 639 for Harveys Lake.” For example, a typical Harveys Lake number will be 639-5558. The new numbering system harmonizes with the rest of the exchanges nationwide which are rapidly con- verting to ANC. Landis explained that the truth of the matter is that the nation’s telephone, system is doing away with the alphabet. Peculiar as it may seem, the reason is that the telephone people are running out of—of all things, phone numbers. Since 1950, nearly 25 million phones have been added in this country. Each one needed a num- ber with a word prefix that people could understand, like NEptune. The problem of finding such pre- fixes: was getting tougher all the time. After a lot of study, the experts concluded that there was only one thing to do to still give the folks the service they want: Change the system. : So, eventually phone numbers won't be partly letters and partly numbers, like NEptune 9-5558 but all digits: 639-5558. ‘All numbers can be remembered for a short time just as easily as letter-numeral combination,” Landis observed. ~ “That's how most numbers are FOAM RUBBER: all sizes In stock for sofa cushe EB tons, seats, benches, station wagons, studio mattresses, DRAPERY FABRICS: largest selection In Pa, Solids, prints; as low as 49¢ a yard. Kozemchak’s blueberry muffins if you want a Kozemchak has her own blueberry bushes, a con- of Rev. Charles Frick, who used to have blueberries in his own yard, and inspired Jim- mie to order four bushes for him- two letters which will form words easily understood and distinguished and which will also work out in telephone switching equipment. (Try the 9-5 combination, for in- stance, Kkalibur? Yling?) The ex- perts went goofy trying to find more words and gave up.” To add more digits to present numbers would make them even harder to remember. (UTopia 8-973621). So it was decided to do away with the pesky letter prefixes and use simply number combina- tions. This means telephone cus- tomers will have the same total number of digits to remember— there simply will be no name as a prefix. In a given area, the plan will give the phone company a much greater number of dial com- binations. “With ANC,” Landis stated,” and Direct Distance Dialing, Harveys Lake subscribers will be added to the nationwide dial network which is another step in the improvement of communications which is tying America more closely together, DO YOU KNOW Gamophobia is the psychic fear of marriage, while gamomania is the morbid desire to marry. Mrs. Kozemchak advises using the little fluted paper cups for the bak- ing, as blueberry muffins stick to a metal pan, even with the most thorough greasing. She gets everything ready in ad- vance, for the more quickly the muffins are mixed, the more light and delicate they are. She sifts two cups of all-purpose flour with a teaspoon and a half of baking powder and a quarter teaspoon of salt, and sets it aside. In a bowl she creams one-half cup of butter or margarine with one cup of sugar, adds two unbeaten eggs and a teaspoon of vanilla, con- tinues to beat until the mixture is blended. Then she adds the flour mixture, and a half cup of milk, alternately, beating between each addition. Then she folds in a cup of blue- berries. She fills the paper cups in the muffin tins about two-thirds full, and bakes in a preheated oven at 375 degrees. Takes about 20 to 25 minutes. The muffins are half way between regular muffins and cupcakes, rich enough to eat without butter, not quite as sweet as cake, The Friendly ONLY ayear per $100-on PERSONAL LOANS at the’ MINERS” Miners NATIONAL BANK “Miners in Dallas” MEMBER FEDERAL DEPOSIT INSURANCE CORPORATION } THE DALLAS POST, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1964 Sep. 14 Last Day For Registering Last date for registration of voters who expect to cast ballots in November, is September 14 at Luzerne County Court House.
