Alex made the headlines first ‘when the man who won him sold him to Emory Newell of Noxen. The headlines stretched to three columns after the day Alex routed a flock of Noxen folk and finally climbed a gasoline pump from which vantage point he took ac- curate swipes at the topknots of the men who tried to coax him down. The bear’s bad temper finally became too much for the Newell family and Bruin was given tem- porary quarters in the Kirby Park Zoo at Wilkes-Barre. It is reported that Alex's temperament has im- proved lately, but even his most loyal boosters are unprepared to say what will happen when his op- ponent challenges him Sunday af- ternoon.
