‘boats entered in the spectacular events
Among the entries in the six-cylindei
class are the boats of Lou Baltimore,
Dr. Ben Davis, whose boat will be driv-
n by his son, Ben, Jr. Bob Roberts,
eorge Cooper and Emil Rothman.
Buoys have been anchored along a
pecified course which will permit
‘spectators at almost any section to see
he races. A number of the entrants
ave been practicing along the course
daily and the speed displayed already
gives indication of a thrilling: per-
ormance Sunday.
There probably will be six races two
or the six-cylinder class and the
thers for boats of lesser power.
The spirited gompetition in the water
events this summer has attracted in-
reasingly-large crowds and officials
ave been commended for their acti-
vity in sponsoring and directing the
events,
Last Sunday’s Results
Last Sunday Robert Thomas and
om Hodorowski captured the honors
or the Catholic Boys’ Club in winning
~ first and second places in the men’s
swimming contests at the Picnic
rounds. Jimmie Campbell took a de-
isive victory over Irvin Roe of Dallas
in the swimming and diving contests.

f Chief of Police Ira C. Stevenson, and |
Anne and Helen Bixby were tied for
first place.
#8 The Y. W. C. A. the Y, M. C.'A., the
‘Catholic Boys’ Club and neighboring
‘communities were well represented in
all contests.
~The crowd easily exceeded the 2,000
“mark and probably was nearer to
,000. It was the unanimous opinion of
fficials and spectators that the event
vas the best yet this Summer.

ALEX, THE BEAR, PLAYS
RETURN ENGAGEMENT AT
LAKE SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Alex, the bear, whose checkered
career has had him on the front
page a number of times
last Fall, will return to the “Lake”
on Sunday afternoon to engage in
a wrestling match ‘at Harvey's
Lake Picnic Grounds.
Alex made the headlines first
‘when the man who won him sold
him to Emory Newell of Noxen.
The headlines stretched to three
columns after the day Alex routed
a flock of Noxen folk and finally
climbed a gasoline pump from
which vantage point he took ac-
curate swipes at the topknots of
the men who tried to coax him
down.
The bear’s bad temper finally
became too much for the Newell
family and Bruin was given tem-
porary quarters in the Kirby Park
Zoo at Wilkes-Barre. It is reported
that Alex's temperament has im-
proved lately, but even his most
loyal boosters are unprepared to
say what will happen when his op-
ponent challenges him Sunday af-
ternoon.
