BUTTON Shavertown, Pa. — A blow to As mining communities, the Coal Regions are dependent on the rail- roads for reasonable, efficient transportation. Therefore the Coal Regions will be vitally affected by two Bills now before the State Legislature. Should these Bills pass, they will prove a body blow to every citizen, every miner, every wage earner, every home in the Coal Regions. The two Bills are known as (1) The Full Crew Bill, which would add unnecessarily to train crews, forcing the railroads to put on trains extra men for whom there is no work, and (2) The Train Limit Bill, which would Hmit trains to puny lengths, destroying present-day economical units. If they pass, it will eost the railroads of this State millions of dol- lars which can only be paid by increasing railroad rates, a burden which will fall particularly heavily on anthracite coal, with ill effects on its use as a fuel. The consequences of any legislation such as this would be to put the use of anthracite at a disadvantage with competitive fuels. This would result in decreasing production and a falling off in mining and employment . . . a blow to every home, every worker, every merchant in the Coal Regions. Yet this would happen if the railroads of Pennsylvania are forced to raise their rates as they will have to if these Bills pass the Legislature. THIS NEW LEGISLATION WILL NOT ADD TO THE SAFETY OF OPERATION. It simply means higher railroad transportation costs, a shrinkage in rail service and of railroad employment generally. A The present law of Pennsylvania imposes upon the Public Service Com- mission the duty of providing safe and efficient operation of railroad trains. The responsibility for such matters properly belongs in their hands and should remain there.
