EDITORIAL COLUMN Devoted to the Current Topics of the Day OUR CIVIC CLUBS I ~The primary purpose of the various civic clubs is community service ind civic betterment. Sometimes these clubs personally sponsor specific tivities for civic improvements, at other times these clubs will assist other lubs and groups of individuals the promotion of better community activ- ties. This Trucksville to Harvey's Lake section boasts of two of these clubs, obably the two most powerful of the National and Inter-National Civic 1bs—Kiwanis and Rotary. These two clubs vary some in their details of management and in their tail of membership. But primarily they exist for the same purpose, name- ly that of civic improvement. Membership in either of the respective clubs voluntary altno subject to the approval of the existing membership. The unity Service Ideal and Aim is self-imposed and not super-imposed. ese two powerful International Clubs have enviable reputations for re- Its; for alliance and allegiance with programs vitalizing force. Accord- the general public has come to expect these results from the various local clubs of these two International Clubs. There is now: a ray of hope that these two clubs are about to justify their existance locally. They have met d socialized together as is quite the custom in other communities. Mem- ers from each of the clubs, in the joint meeting, have voiced their approval f a committee from each club to sit around a common round table there to iscuss plans for a separate and at same time united attack on any and maybe eventually all of the individual needs making for better civic improve- ment in this great UP IN THE MOUNTAIN SECTION. The public and the press shall be interested in these potential plans. 0 deride tel eg WHATS IN A NAME? What is in a name? There is more than we sometimes think when we take eight days to name the new babe Su, An or Bill. And there is more ~ than we think in the name of the place where we live. We have built our me in Trucksville, Shavertown or Dallas, but what are these? They are ~ just parts of this great UPPER WEST SIDE section. The interests of this -community are virtually identical. The several communities of this pper West Side Section have just recently been called “Greenwood Hills,” “Union Heights,” “Little Flower Country” and Matropolitan Dalls. An airplane pilot, flying half a mile high above the field called for light to guide his landing, and without any human agency, the lights flashed n. The New York Times described the event thus: “The pilot turned the handle of a siren fixed in the cockpit beside him. e howl of the siren, at first a low moan, rose to a shrill shriek, and then— ough the switches were actuated by no human touch, the great flood ts of the Newark airport flashed on. “The howl of the siren was an order for ‘Lights’ and it was obeyed in- stantly by ‘Mr. Televox,” the electrical sentry, the watchman who never leeps.” Waves of sound at a certain pitch make an electrical connection in the head of “Mr. Televox,” and current does the rest. ~ Here is modern magic which in actual performance goes far beyond the ~ highest pretense of the mumbo-jumbo artists who have preyed on humanity ‘through the ages. “I hear the thoughts of him who thinks evil against the king!” yowls the Zulu witch finder. She lies, but if she told the truth, how utterly unimpor- ; it would be compared to teh making of a machine that hears and obeys ders, and turns on lights at the sound of a whistle. g ~ When Washington died, his country contained 5,000,000 inhabitants; and 1e could have spoken at most to 5,000 of them at a time—one-tenth of 1 er cent. r : If he could wal kout of Mount Vernon now, he would find 115,000,000 ellow countrymen, and he could talk to about 75,000,000 of them at one time. 1 he magic of science is the only kind that never seems to wear out. P 3 SE ol ‘ se ew INDIANA OLD AGE PENSION BILL DEFEATED ~ The old age pension hill, sponsored by the United Mine Workers, the ‘raternal Order of Eagles and organized clubs and societies in general, was defeated in the senate of the Indiana Assembly and sent to the legislative graveyard for the remainder of the session. The bill provided for optional ‘pensioning by counties of persons over the age of 65 years. The measure was branded as “socialistic” and a “terrible raid on the State treasury,” al- though it was contended by its proponents that the law would not cost the State a penny. The bill was defended by Senators Gray and Nejdl as a humanitarian measure and far superior to the poorhouse method of taking re of aged dependents. The good citizens of Indiana will continue the fight for the measure, which in the Editor’s mind seems a good solution for the assistance in the last days of our aged and maimed. A poor house is not so pleasant. The constant contact with relatives and friends would be much more home-like. hd RR NOW WHAT TO YOU SUPPOSE? “A local man fearing that he might be smoking too much, began asking " old, timers, who are heavy smokers, what the effect had been on them. Most of them thought they were about as healthy as they could expect to be if they didn’t smoke at all. One man confessed that he believed smoking had injured his stomach. “You know,” he said, “I had a digestion that was so good that I always claimed I could eat half a mince pie at midnight and sleep like a child. I I could eat anything, and I usually did. I had to be a little careful now. One piece of pie is all I take for dinner.” Our friend is sixty-five. He seems to cherish a genuine fear that his digestion has broken down, and that if he had never smoked he might still \be able to eat a whole mince pie at any hour of the day or night.
