The humblest Catholic layman and the wisest theologian worship on the same basic principal that founded one Church which, like its | founder, is infallible with matters to do with the soul. If the theologian's mind is = hide- bound because he must be guided by the same religious dogma as the lay- man’s then the engineer's mind is hide bound because he dare not devi- ate from'the delicatessen dealer's ma- thematical dogma. The dogmas of the Catholic church | are comparatively few—fewer fthan' those of science and art—fewer than those of a profession or a business. You can’t even play a good game of golf without following the basic prin- ciples of the game. Then, why indict the Catholic who does the same thing in the vital matter of saving his soul? Every belief and practice of the church has behind it sound logic. It |§ is only because things Catholic are misunderstood that they are criticiz- ed by the sincere non-Catholic. There are 160 laboratories scatter- |} | ed throughout Pennsylvania where your physician may have tests made for the early typing of pneumonia and the application of modern treat- ment which has in the past three years reduced the death rate pneumonia nearly fifty per cent. .| THERE ARE MIGHTY FEW PEOPLE WHO DIE OF OLD AGE, SAY THE DOCTORS Scarcely anybody dies of old age. If a person lives long enough he is very sure to die of one of the degen- erative diseases. The deat hrate from heart disease cancer, apoplexy, pneumonia, neph- ritis or kidney trouble, diabetes, tu. .berculosis and appendicitis is ab- | § normally high. Such a death rate is quite out of proportion to the low death rate pos- x sible if the available knowledge of preventive medicine were applied to the fullest extent. But a thorough physical examina- tion is the surest way of living the most years. Many ailments, diabetes or album- inuria for instance, may exist for a number of years without noticeable symptoms. Valvular heart trouble may be pres- ent throughout life without the pa- tient’s being aware of it until the fa- tal attack occurs. By detecting the first signs of de-| terioriation in our organs these per- iodic physical examinations can fore- stall death. If a person is overweight he should let the doctor prescribe a reducing diet. Such a diet should not more than one pound a week. Sensible reducing is the best life insurance. After 35 years of age ,the death rate increases 1 per cent for every take off pound of overweight. Human life, on the average, has been prolonged 20 years during the past century. This is mainly through the reduce tion of infant and child deaths. Medical science has the facilities to prolong life in the older age groups. But the cooperation of the public is needed. Treat yourself to a physical exame- ation and start the New Year sensi- ly.
