A small fire occurred at James V. Young's planing mill about noon last Wednesday. Some young fellows have been so ungrateful for tho accommodation given to the public by Mr Riston that on several occasions in passing along at night they have let all the air out of the tank. Don't do It again boys, It might not bo well for you. Collided With a Horse. Katie, nine-year-old daughter of Frank Bracken, bad a narrow escape from serious injury Saturday evening by colliding with a horse while riding bicycle up Main street. Katie was not riding fast and the horse was walking slow or the collision would have boon serious. It was getting dark and the gentleman driving the horse did not see the little girl until the horse had knocked her down, but be stopped the animal before it stepped on ber. The girl escaped without injury and the bi cycle was not damaged much. The mishap drew a large crowd In short order. Supposed to be Incendiarism. Between two and three o'clock last Wednesday morning Black's portable saw mill, which was located on the Al len Burtop timber lot, near Aliens Mills, and 200,000 feet of lumber, were totally destroyed by fire. The flro was not discovered until the roof was all ablaze and board pile near by was on fire. There was nothing saved out of the mill and It was by hard work that several large board piles were saved. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it is supposed by some that the mill was set afire. The loss amounts to about $5,000, with no Insuranco. The lumber belonged to Allen Burtop. Death of Mrs. E. L. Johnston. Mrs. Sarah Rebecca Johnston, wife of E. L. Johnston, died at tho homo of her sister, Mr. George Small, In Knox township, Thursday morning, August 17th, from diubotos. She had been 111 almost 18 months. Mrs. Johnston had gone to Knox township to visit her sister and had been there eight or ten days when tho Death Angel called for her. Her body was brought to the homo In West Reynoldsville Saturday morning and at 1.30 p. m. that day fun eral service! were held at the houso, conducted by Rev. W. Frank Rubor. Interment wns made In tho Reynolds vlllo Cemetery. Tho deceased was a daughter of Amos Rett, the West Reynoldsvlllo butcher. She was born In Rose township, Jefferson county, March 5, 1872, making her 27 years old Inst March. Sho was married to E. L. Johnston January 21, 1H!7. Mrs. John ston wns a member of the United Evan gelical church. She Is survived by her husband and a little duughter about 15 months old. (recently changed from Fire Co. No. 1) of this place, accompa nied by tho Keystone band, left In two special cars Thursday morning for Bradford to attend the convention of tho Northwestern Firemen's Associa tion. Ono of tho cars was conceded to lie tho most handsomely decorated that has entered tho oil town In several years. Tho flro liuldles were royally re ceived and magnificently entertained. The decorations on the principal streets wero done by professional decorators from Buffalo and cost thousands of dol lars. The streets wero a blazo of bril liant colors. Tho citizens of Bradford, with the firemen, vied with each other in making tho visitors feel at home, and well did they succeed. During tho stay threo freo balls and three receptions were given to tho visiting firemen. Wednes day evening ono of tho finest banquets ever held at Bradford was given nt the St. James to tho chiefs and delegates. Thursday the parade lined up 5M com panies strong with 20 bands. There were 1700 uniformed firemen In line. Although tho thermometer indicated ovor IK) degrees in tho shade tho "boys" stuck manfully to their sultry Job of inarching seven miles. Tho parade was nearly two miles long and It took over an hour to pass a given point. Tho prize races took place Friday afternoon. There were ovor twenty en tries. Butler won the hoso race and In doing it broke all records, running the 200 yards and coupling ready to throw a stream of water In the amazing time of 27 2-5 seconds. This Is one-fifth of a second faster than any previous con test. Rldgway captured second In this race In 28 1-5 seconds. In the hub and hub race Rldgway won first In 22 2-5 and Butler second In 23 seconds. Fust time was made In the hook and ladder race, but as there Is a protest entered It Is not known who Is the winner. The DuBols Drill Co. won first prize, $100.00, In the prize drill contest. Rcnovo won second prize. The business meeting was held Wed nesday afternoon and evening. There was a vigorous fight made against en larging the district, but by some fine wire pulling and the hearty support of the leading men from Rldgway, Kane, Smethport, Bradford and other places what at first seemed defeat turned into a glorious victory, as Reynoldsvlllo was, elected by 107 votes out of 108 delegates present. DuBols had a hard row to hoe and barely recolved enough votes to be admitted. This was owing to the fact of their having belonged to another district. Had it been known that they hnd asked for the convention of the Central district in ltlOO it Is doubtful if they would have received a vote How ever all Is well that ends well. Our firemen rocolved great pralso for the neatness and handsome appearance of their uniforms, not to mention wear ers of the same. Tho band, too, enme in for a share of pralso and was heartily cheered wherever It played The re turn was made on a special train late Friday night Every person present speaks highly of the grand time they had and their only wish is that the next convention, which Is to be held at Kane, may be half as pleasant.
