Tliore ban boon consldorttblo comment during tho past week or ton days upon the detention of pupils after school, es pecially those who staid out In ordor to attond lairs and circuses, and wore de tained In order to mako up tho lost recitations. Now there are two ways of ((Hiking at tho matter, therefore lot us carefully consider both sides and we may then HtrhiiM bo bettor ablo to de cide rightly whether or not It la judi cious and advlsablo. We will admit In the first place that there Is an und no attraction In a circus for tho avurago American youth, and that It doesn't seem Just right when tho pupil has been excused by the parent, that the school authorities should eoinMil tho pupil to make up lost tlmo; but on tho other hand, there baa been a course of study laid down and a oodo of regu lations governing the hcIkmiIh, and every day's work is luid out for each pupil who must. In order to complete each year's course, not otnlt ono portlisn of It, and If unavoidably compelled to logo any tlmo ahould willingly, aril of his own accord, mako up tho deficiency. Parents should encourage this feature, or the result will bo, if omlsidong are allowed, that tbo pupils may fall In ex aminations for promotion. Then tho parents will complain that tho teachers have not done itheir duty, when tho whole ctiuan of said failure rests ontlroly m-lth tho pupil hlniHolf. Wo imiHt tako Into con sideration which is tho moat Important, tho momcntury pleasures derived from a circus or a fair, or the hihtfng benefits derived from regular attendance and a close application to the study of tho twelve .years' course as Adopted by our schools. Llfu Ih short and tlmo is fleeting, and it Is tho present with which wo have to do rather than the future. Wo would suggeat that every ono look ou both aides of this matter before condemning hastily. It is tho duty of every parent In town to endorse our Hobool system and anything that pertains to tho benefit of their children individually, and to the schools as a whole. Encourage the boys and girls to right motives and onergotlo action. Tho teachers must stund by the princi clpal, ;pupils by tho teachers, tho board of directors by the schools, and tho par ents by tho ubove in Its entirety in order to make our schools a success. SCHOOL NOTES. W. H. Btamev and F. S. Weakley, Esq's, and Mrs. W. J. Weaver attended chapel exercises on Wednesday morn ing last. The high school is contemplating tho formation of an alumni asaouatlon, con sisting iof those of the former high school pupils who hold teaubers' certifi cates. The rooms can be kept comfortable this weather by the Bmoai system. Nevertheless, we need window curtains badly. The pupils received their monthly reports aa .Friday. Look Uiero. over carefully nd where you were deficient last month improve It this. Great interest is being takes in the literary exercises by the several socie ties. The mouth-pieces were attached to the speaking tubes on Saturday last and thoy are a decided convenienee as a means of ooHununicatitan between Prin cipal Lenkerd and the 'teachers. Photographer Hilton took a number of views of toe interior and exterior of the building. There were forty-nine pupils absent un circus day. Enough lor one room. Thus one whole day's sehool for one room lost for the district. SUMMARY "IRST MOUTH. -8 a 3& Principal Lenkerd's Report.1 Room 14, Mr. Madden " 13, " Weaver . J2i Woodward.. " 11, " Mitchell.... DID IT HURT YOUf A Question That 1 Often ttn of Plaee and Unnecessary. The old hymn in Ham Taylor' "Orig inal Poems" beginning with " Who ran to help me when I fell?" ought to have a provisional clause added to it The person who hasten to help a sufferer who baa been shocked by a fall should not say a lingle word. Of course the benevolent bystander is brimful of questions: "Where are you hurtf" "Have yon sprained your anklcT" and lastly the insane request to know whether you can fall down a flight of SO steps or from a plassa 10 feet above ground and not be damaged any more than if yon had thrown yourself on a down pillow only a foot away. Of course yon are bnrt, and the nerve hook la so groat that any sort of ques tion, even If "they" shall fotoh hot water, is an additional blow to the nerv ous system. Yon are suffering, per haps, too much to speak, yet they pelt yon with questions while every power of your body Is endeavoring to regain self control. You ought not to answer. Yon would like to scream that "it hurts" a hundred times more for being summoned to speak and to diagnose yourself. All instructions in the line of "First aid to the injured" should begin with, "Be perfectly silent when yon ran to lift or help a person who has been knocked down or who baa fallen and is still partly dazed with the tremendous shook. " Let it bo for the sufferer to say, "Oh, my headl" or "Oh, my lngl" or back. Ho will indicate aa soon aa it is necessary the injured part, but moan while yon are driving him nearly fran tic by asking about it Those, simplo yet iniportunt directions do not )em to be impressed noon the averugo helpful mind. Taot, of all things, is as necessary as a kuowledgo of a tourniquet madu from a stick and a pocket handkerchief. Hot water, of course, is roquired for all bruises and sprains, but let it be brought without asking. The Telief to the victim of an accident in having swift and noiseless helpers about him or her absolutely silent, yet knowing ex actly what to do is very great Any one who "has been thoro" knows it all. Yet how quickly is it forgotten when we run to lift up somebody else and be gin to pelt him with: "Where did it hurt you?" "Are you hurt?" Phila delphia Record. Red Tartles In a Ttnlllaa Spring. That portion of southom or lower California called Hell's Half Aore appears to be situated directly over a substratum of fire, which causes the mud oud water to boil as if iu a cal dron. At one placo on the Half Aore there are over 100 boiling spriugs and not mad geysers on a plat of ground that is not of greater extent than a com mon city sqnare. The chief spring in this queer aggregation of boiling and pouting jets of mud and water is oalled the Fountain of the Boiled Turtles on account of its carious habit of occa sionally ejecting numbers of small red turtles. The temperature of this spring is 30 degrees, 14 degrees higher thuu the temperature required to boil water and or ordinary atuiospberio pressure. Notwithstanding the fact that the tem perature is suffioient ta boil meat per teotly within a few minutes, the small red tartles spoken of live and breed there just as the ordinary variety does in waters of common lakes, rivers and otheratreams. The spring is called the Fountain of Boiled Turtles because the queer, hard shelled creatures which inhabit it have the appearance of being cooked perfectly done. St Louis Re public. Monkey Have Mo Flea. It is carious that monkeys should be thought lo be infected with what nat uralist call the pulex irritan and What ordinary people know aa the flea. A every zoologist is aware, monkeys have neither fleas nor any other para site whatsoever; in which, of course, they differ vastly from man. As a matter of fact, when monkeys begin to pick each other about in the friendly way we have all observed, they merely detach bits of hardened sebaoe ou matter which has been excreted by the glands, and the flea idea i entirely fabulous.
