Twen ty uoputy sheriffs wore sent to tho sceno of the trouble Most of the Ital ian strikers apparently understand but llttlo English, and through Interpre ters Superintendent Young told them that they could all return to work on the old conditions, nnd all those who did not do so would bo paid oft and now mon employed In their places. Some of the strikers said thoy were willing to roturn to work, but woro afraid to do so for fear thoy would meet with violence at the hands of tho ringleaders of the strike. When the deputy sheriffs arrived tho strikers again formed In lino and marched up the Notch road. Yesterday afternoon Superintendent Jones paid off 700 of the strikers and told them to leavo, as they would not bo takon back to work. The strikers crowdod around tho armed deputy sheriffs. A spokesmnn for the lattor told tho strikers that If they did not leave at once, nnd attempted to make any roslstanco. they would be shot down. Tho Italians muttered In an excit able manner, and a large gang of them went away and erected a black flag. There wbb an Inscription In Italian stating the strikers' grievances and In largo letters these words: "Who cuts this down will die." Superintendent Jones, rjrotccted by the deputies, hauled down the black flag. The strikers then went to an other point, where thoy flung to tho broeze another black flag. Some or the now men, while return ing to work yesterday afternoon, wero stoned by tho strikers. The latter, who received their wages, finally went to some low grog shops and began to drink heavily. It Is said, will probably receive financial support from the foreign residents of the Mos quito coast. Prince Clarence Is now at Kingston, but ho recently declared he would never break faith with the British government, preferring his easy retirement here tn active life as king of the Mosquito coast. Prince Clarence, otherwise Chief Clarence, the former niter of the Mos quito coast, is now about 26 years old. Some five years ago, as hereditary chief of the Mosquito coast territory, he came Into power over about 10.000 subjects. Nicaragua at that time had begun to encroach on the Mosquito ter ritory, and Chief Clarence resisted suc cessfully. But the state of affairs which followed compelled the United States consul at Blueflelds to nsk pro tection for the Americans there, and Chief Clarence, after repeated defeats, was compelled to seek refuge on board the United States cruiser Marblehead.
