In the l'ro- Cathedral on Htanton street yesterday Hev. Dr. Charles A. IlrlgRs, who wbh suspended for heresy by the Presby terian assembly, was ordained a priest of the Episcopal church. He was or dained together with the Ilev. Charlen A. Snedeker, and the ordination cere monies were conducted by Ulshop Pot ter. Tho little church was crowded with people, and the ceremonies wero notnblo for tho qulotnees that prevail ed. Those who oxpected, from tho great outcry of tho past three or four weoks, no mo sensational features were disappointed. Thoro wns no scone, no excitement, and no protost was filed at the beginning, during or at tho close of tho ordination. Tho ceromonles wero very long, commencing at 10:30 o'clock and con tinuing until lato tn tho afternoon. If anything, the services were hurried a little, and tho goncral communion which followed tho communion of tho postulants or candidates tended to ox tend tho time. There was a large crowd about the llttlo Pro-Cathedral church as early as 8:30 o clock. This Increased as the tlmo for tho ordination ceremonies ap proached. After the Sunday school had finished Its exercises tho vicar, Hev. Dr. Pad dock, wns approached by Inspector REV. DR. BRiaas. Cross, of the police, who held a con versatlon with him. Several pollco mon wore outside tho church and some In tho church. The church does not scat more than 500 people, and there was about twlco that number standing. Ulshop Potter drove to tho church with tho candidates for admission, Rev. Dr. Charles A. Brlggs and Rev. Dr. Charles A. Snedeker. Before the ceremony Bishop Potter said he had no notice of protest, and had received no protest. He smiled at the thought of any of tho objecMng clergymen ap pearing In the church and making 11 scene. Ho, however, said that he had received a letter from a layman pro testing against tho ordination of Dr. Brlggs, and ob this letter was written under a misapprehension of the facts and law he had answered. He did not desire to give the name of tho lay man, who, ho said, was high up in tho councils of the church. Inasmuch as the letter ho himself had written in answer to it was general In Its nature nnd sat forth his position, he had no bicctlon to making It public. The let ter Is a defense of Dr. Brlggs' attitude. Rev. Dr. Brlggs was somewhat nervous, thougn ho aid not Detray it n the church during the ceremonies. here was a semblance of nervousness in all the celebrants. There seemed to bo a tendency to hurry through the ceremonies. Precisely at 10: SO the organist be gan an organ voluntary. He naa scarcely finished It when the opening strains of the processional wore hoard. After tho choir camo the vicar, Rev. Dr. Paddock, then the candidates. Rev. Drs. Drlggs and Snedeker, their spon sors. Rev. Drs. Smith, Nolson and Os borne, and lastly the bishop. Rev. Dr. Brlggs were the stole of academical degree, as did also Rev. Dr. Snedeker. Bishop Potter woro his usual vest ments. Tho congregation stood during tho processional. The candidates and their sponsors tooic seats wnicn naa ceen placed In a row. In front of the chancel. Bishop Potter took a seat near the holy table nnd Rev. D. George "William Douglass, who was to deliver tho or dination sermon, Rov. Dr. Osborne and the presbyters took seats on either side of the chancel. Rov. Dr. Douglass Is an occasional preacher In Grace church, which was offered by the Rev. Dr. Huntington for the ordination. Ho lives In Tuxedo Park, N. J. A stmplo service according to the Episcopal church was gone through, and then the rites of ordination In ac cordance with "the form and manner of ordaining priests" were begun. After a prayer and singing Rev. Dr. Douglass delivered his sermon. In his charge to the candidates Dr. Douglass spoke slowly and Impressively. At the conclusion of the sermon of ordination Rev. Dr. Osborne read the litany. That) the most Impressive moment arrived, The sponsors went forward and pre sented the candidates to the bishop. The candidates stood together, with ther sponsors, before the bishop. "Dis ease fastened its clutches upon her and for seven years she withstood Us severest tests, but her vital organs were nndermined and death seemed Imminent, For three months she coughed incessantly, and could not sleep.
