Dotnllnd Ilpportti Show That There W E.Troptloimlly Hnrd Flixhttntrln the Unrly I'nrt of tile Wok Scout Vnttnur the Klrnt to Kilter llnllnnc Manila, Mny C. Major Gonornl Mac- Arthur's division advanced to Sn Fer nando yesterday, and found tbnt tho placo had been ovacuated by the Insur gents, who left only a smnlldetachment to cover their retreat by train. General MacArthur occupied tho burning town without loss. The Insurgents south ot Manila at tempted to rush through Brigadier General Ovenshlne's line Thursday night. The attempt failed, but the in surgonts maintained a fusillade ot musketry on the Fourteenth Infantry regiment for several hours. Tho dem onstration was Ineffectual beyond scaring the inhabitants ot Mnlate. Tho outposts ot tho Idaho and California regiments beyond San Pedro Macatl were also attacked during tho night. Major Goneral Law ton is still quar tered at Ballnng. Detailed reports of tho work of Gon eral Lawton's expedition show that harder fighting took place during the early part of tho week than earlier ac counts Indicated. In an attack upon San Rafael the American forces wera met with heavy firo from a large num ber of Insurgents, who were concealed In tho Jungle on all sides. It was only the adoption of the tactics followed in Indian fighting In the United Statos, every man for himself, that saved tho division from great loss. General Lawton, as usual, was at tho head of his line with his staff. The insurnent leaders Grcitorlo and PIo del Pilar, who had SOO men in Ballnng, retreated wnon Goneral Law ton approached tho town. Chief of Scouts Young, with 11 men, entered Ballnag ahead of tho army and rang the church bells to announce that they had possession ot the city. General Lawton, when attaaklnir In force outsldo of Ballnag, saw women and children in the enemy's trenches, and sent Captain Case In advance with white flag to warn the Insurgents to remove the non-combatants. When within BOO yards of the trenches two volleys were fired at Captain Case's party. There are 2.000 Spanish prisoners in the hands of the Filipinos at San Miguel. Thoy are served with five cents worth of rice daily, and are com pelled to work hard on the rebel de fenses. Several hundred of the Filipino wounded aro at San Miguel. The Insurgents aro sending their wo men and children to the Blacnabatto mountains. OFFICIALS NOT APPREHENSIVE. The Vnltto of Lnwton's Lamina do Day Expedition Novr Apparent. Washington, May 6. Tho continued rebel demonstrations south of Manila are causing no apprehensions to war department officials, as the brigades of Ovonshlno and Hall are said to be ample for every emergency. Together they have about 4,800 men, besides tho Ninth nnd Twelfth regular Infantry, who have Just arrived at Manila. In view of these sharp demonstrations to the Boutb, the work done by Lawton on his expedition to Laguna do Bay Is receiving credit not heretofore accord ed to It. One of the main results of the expedition was to destroy the small craft by which the rebels might havo crossed the lake and moved north on the rear of MacArthur's forces. Now they aro hemmed in on a narrow strip of land between the lake and the ocean, unablo to cross the lako, while the march is too long to circle the lake to the south. Thus the work of Law ton is holding the rebels, some 9,000 In number, to the south, leaving Mao Arthur free from danger of an attack In force from the rear. The report that the Filipinos were trying to break through the American linos Is evidence to the war depart ment that this force Is becoming short of supplies. It is evidently General Otis' intention to remain on the de fensive so long as he can keep this force separate from the main body of Agutnaldo. It Is said General Otis be lieves that he can starve this southern army Into submission. A Clever Trick It certainly looks like it, but thero is really no trick about it. If the blood in sufficient quan. tity leaves the body because of a wound or hemorrhage of the lungs the result is death. . Life depends on the blood because the blood carries to all parts of the body the nutritive elements necessary to sustain it What If these nutritive ele ments are absent? What if they are supplanted by poisonous, effete matter and disease germs? The first result is disease par tial death. The final result is the same as from loss of blood. All disease is traceable to im purity or weakness of the blood and that is the reason the "Golden Medical Discovery" cures so many different diseases it purifies and vitalizes the blood makes it rich, red and healthy fills it with nutriment for the starving nerves and tissues. Consumption is properly a dis ease of the bloodso is scrofula so is rheumatism. They look like different diseases but one medicine will relieve all three.
