Key West, Apt II 2,". The Associated Pi ess dispatch boat Dauntless arrived In this hurbur shortly before midnight having lu tow the tlrst sailing: vessel prize of the cunipalKtii the schooner Mathllde. ot Havana, GO tons, loaded with rum. When the Dauntless left the main licet under Iteur Admiral Sampson at 3:M o'clock on Saturday afternoon what seemed a thorough blockade of Ha vana had been successfully effected. The licet range from eight to ten miles from the shore, along which they are extended for fully 20 miles in the fol lowing order, running; from west to east: Muyllower, Iowa. Newport, De troit, Marhlehead, Indiana, New York and Wilmington, with the torpedo boat Porter attending the llagshlp. Morro Castle and the city of Havuna are In good view from the lkigshlp with glasses, hut the roast, as Is always the case. Is coveted Kith haze. No news of what Is occutinif In the blockaded city has been obtained, and the news paper men are equally In doubt as to the Intentions of Hear Admiral Samp son and the United States government. Soon after 9 o'clock Saturday morn ing the Aniphlttite, Puritan, Cincin nati, Custiiie, Machlas and three tor pedo boats, after much Interchange of signals, parted company with the tlag shlp, sailing In a northeasterly direc tion, presumably to blockade Matan zas. Cardenas and Sugua la Grande. lnst Friday morning the Dauntless left Key West an hour and twenty min utes behind the other boats, but In four and a half hours she was at the head of the procession of newspaper boats. The Capture of the l'cdrn. The scene of the opening event of what may prove to be the prolonged hostilities between the governments of the United States and Spain was just off the coast of Cuba, at a point about ten miles east of Morro Castle. The shot was ilied from the New York across the bow of the Spanish steamer Pedto, of Bilbao, outward bound from Hnvana. She hove to Immediately, and In the course of an hour a nilze crew from the llagshlii was on board her, and she was on her way to Key West. The capture of the Pedro occurred at G o'clock on Filday afternoon, lu full view of the Dauntless, which was the nearest vessel to the New York at the time. The lookout on the tons of the New York's military masts had sighted the Spanish colors flying from a Spanish stefuner which had Just left Havana harbor. Those on board of the steamer must have seen the New York over hauling them, hut they made no pre tense of stopping. The chase contin ued for nearly an hour, and bv that time the New York had passed the steamer and stopped about half a milt; oft her port bow. In another moment there was a puff of smoke from the New York, followed by the sharp report of a six pounder. The shot passed over the bows of the steamer and threw up a great spray when It struck the water. There wos no mistaking its mean ing. The steamer stopped Its engines Immediately and swung around In the heavy sea which was running. The next move came promptly. A large wlmlehoat was lowered from the New York, tilled with sailors and marines, and fully armed and In charge of an ofllcer. The prize proved to be the Pedro, of about 2,000 tons. The sun was just sinking below the hoiizon when the prize crow from the New York climbed over the side of the Pedro, and a few minutes later the Spanish ensign was hauled down. While this was transpiring the out lines of another steamer were seen sev eral miles to the westward. Dusk was gathering, and It was Impossible at that distance to distinguish hor nation ality, hut the New York put out for her as soon as she had cast loose thp whaleboat containing the prize crew for the Pedro. (lot'iumi Steiimor United. The New York then fired another blank shot of warning "heave to" In the dhection of the second vessel sighted by the flagship, and upon gaining proper distance the New York tired u second shot, this time across the hows of the second steamer, and the latter hove to at once. Upon Investigation it was learned that she was a (ieniiiin steamer that hail Just left Havana and she was allowed to proceed. The Pedro whs taken to Key West, the New York returned to the remain der of the fleet r-nd all the vessels lay to and drifted all night outside of Ha vana harbor. Torpedo boats and one of the cruisers did patrol duty In the vicinity of the tleet all night, but no vessel of any kind approached the men of war. That shotB had been fired by the New York and that one steamer hud been seized and that another had been stop ped must have been known In Havana very soon ufter the occurrences, for the whole affair could be witnessed from the shore. However, none of the vessels were close enough to the city of Havana Itself to Know what demon titrations the events caused there. The New York, with the torpedo boat Porter n close attendance, wns lying about eight or ten miles off Havana, when the smoke of a steamer was seen a few tulles to the eastward. The flag ship and the Porter started for her Im mediately, but when they drew near they found that she was the Italian man-of-war Olovanna Hattsan, bound for Hnvana. The Italian run the Amer ican colors up to his masthead and tired a rear admiral's salute of 15 guns, It being the first salute Admiral Samp son hud received from a foreign war ship since his appointment to his pres ent rank. The New York returned the salute, and ns the firing occurred only a few miles off shore the Incident prob ably picated consternation In Havana. When thp Olovanna llausan was first sighted the excitement was terrific. The Cincinnati, the New York, the Maihlehead and the Wilmington start ed In pursuit. The distance which sep arated the vessels rendered It Impos sible to make out the warship's iden tity. She was thought to be the Vlz caya or the Almlrante Oquendu, head ing hard for Havana. The .men at the guns shouted with glee. The stokers off duty below cheered vociferously and begged to be allowed to go on deck to help shoot nt the first armed enemy met. The olllcers crowded on the quar ter deck, ns elated as the men, though under better control. The bugler blew "general quartern." All hands flew to their posts. Down came the shrouds with a rattle. The life lines vanished from the deck. Hear Admiral Sampson, standing on the bridge, said deliberately to Captain Chadwlck: "Yes, the Oquendo or the Vlzcaya," and then added: "I should like to bag them both." Then it was seen thnt the chase was Hying an Ital ian Hag, hut this was no proof that behind her still Invisible guns Span lards were not concealed, ready to shoot under advantage or subterfuge. All the guns on the New York's port side and In the forward and after turrets were trained on the stranger. A few minutes later, when about 1.D00 yards separated the New York from her tar get, the American flag was run up by the warship, and then It wns known she was not a Spaniard. Then came the rear admiral's salute, which was answered, and the Incident ended. Tim Porter Captured a Sehoonor. Shortly before noon yesterday the torpedo boat Porter captured a Spanish coasting schooner, Mathllde. She was loaded with barrels of rum, was sunk almost to her rails, and the Porter had much dltllculty In dragging the heavy schooner through the water, but she finally brought her prize alongside the llagshlp. and by this time she had hoisted the Stars and Stripes above the Spanish (lag at the Mathllde's mast head. The Dauntless was about ready to leave for Key West, and Admiral Sampson asked the dispatch boat to tow the prize to that port for him, which was done, a prize Crew from the New York being placed on board the Mathllde. The prize crew sat on top of the schooner's cargo, each man ready with his rllle to prevent any at tempt that might he made by the schooner's own crew to cut loose from the Dauntless. It was an example ot the grim Irony of fate which gave to the most fu mous ex-flllbuster the lirst opportunity to tow a Spanish pilze to the United States. As the Dauntless passed under the lee of the New York she received the heartiest of cheers from the blue Jackets, while the olllcers of the llag shlp chipped their hands, the mega phone roared some encouraging words, and Admiral Sampson lifted his cap In answer to the salute of the corre spondents. Knsign Christy, with a crew of IS from the cruiser Detroit and four from the llagshlp, brought Into port yester day afternoon the captured Spanish steamer Catallna, 3,11)1 tons, which left Cadiz March 7 and was bound from New Orleans for Barcelona via Ha vana, for which latter port she was making when tuken. The Catallna was captured about 4 o'clock yesterday morning, 12 miles from Havana. Shu was taken by the cruiser Detroit When the first shot was fired her cap- tain made a desperate effort to escape his pursuer, and the chase was pro longed for eight miles. Finally a solid Bhot brought her to. She Is carrying a cargo of 0,000 bundles of staves. Captured by the (iuuboiit Helena The United Stutes gunboat Helena captured the Spanish steamship Miguel Jover early yesterday morning. The Jover's cargo Is composed of cotton and staves. The prize Is estimated to value $100,000, her cargo alone being worth $150,000. She belonged to the Plnillo line, Barcelona. The Helena did not sail with thp fleet on Friday morning. but remained here until Saturday, when she steamed out to sea. She was cruising about 150 miles In a south westerly direction, when the Jover, steering a southeasterly course, hove in sight. The Helena fired a blank shot and the Spaniard instantly hovo to. ThP gunboat then put a prize crew of 12 marines, an engineer and 10 blue Jackets on board the Jover and con voyed the pilze into port. According to dispatch boats which have Just reached this port from the United States fleet the port of Havana Is blockaded, but otherwise the situa tion Is unchanged. Contrary to reports previously received, not a shot has been fired by either side. An Enterprising DruggUt. There are few men more wide awake and enterprising than A. THE STEAMER PARIS SAFE. Floot Ocean I.luer Has nt lleon Cap tured by the Simnlorils, London, April 25. A point of vital Interest for all Londoners Is whether the United States steamer Paris has escaped the Spanish warships. Up to midnight there was absolutely no news as to the liner at Southampton. It is believed here that the Paris is well out to sea, and that there Is no like lihood of the vessel being captured by the Spaniards. This belief, coupled with the news that the Topeka Is safe, has made the American colony here especially Jubilant. Spain's adherence to the right of privateering if expedient has given great satisfaction in Spain, where the public press markedly approves the attitude of the government. Fears are expressed on the continent that the United States will find It necessary to retaliate, despite the adhesion of the government to the declaration of Paris. In any case Spain's uttltude will en hance the Importance of tho negotla Hons of the powers, which, it is under stood, have been Initiated by Italy with a view to making arrangements to protect neutralH on the seas. In brief the Identical note declares that our government will not resort to privateering; thnt enemy'd goods hi neutral bottoms, snve contraband, nro exempt from seizure; thnt neutral goods not contraband under enemy's flag are safe from seizure, and that blockades, to be binding, must be ef fective. In -substance these nre the principles laid down In the agreement of Paris of 1S5G. Tlie ofllclals are not disturbed at the semi-official notice from Madrid that Spain will refuse to bo bound by the same principles and forbid prlvnteerlng, for they nro satis fled that the grent commercial powers will not tolernto the practice of priva teering under the Spanish Hag. Inasmuch as there exists a great nmount of misapprehension not only among foreign countries, but also among American shippers, as to the character of merchandise that Is con traband and llnblg to seizure during the progress of war, tho following unofficial but authentic statement hns been ob tained from a high olllcial of the gov ernment- HOW TO FIND OUT Fill a bottlo or common glass with urlno and let It stand twenty-four hours; a sedi ment or settling Indicates an unhealthy condition of tho kidneys.
