While the nortlf east hurricane on the middle Atlantic coast has abated In fury, sharp squalls are still blowing around the Delaware capes and enormous tides are reported all along the bay and river. The list of maritime casualties grows larger as further details of the gale's havoo are received. The Italian bark Francesco H., which sailed from this port Oct. 18 for Oporto, went to pieces at Fourteen Foot bank, eighty miles below the city. The vjmsel's master, Captain Callvuno, and eleven of the crew of twelve men reached this city last night after a day and night of thrilling escapes from death. The twelfth man of the crew, Marlon Castellano, seaman, refused to leave the vessel, and In all probability Is lost. Owing to light winds the Francesco, under Pilot Bennett, anchored about a week ngo a short distance off Fourteen Foot bank. All went well until Sunday, When the storm broke about her, in creasing in fury until about 10 o'clock at night. The sea was running high and the wind had almost reached hurri cane strength. The waves broke over the deck and shook her from stem to stern. Both anchors were out, and as each sea broke they tightened and tugged. Near midnight one of the chains broke away, and the vessel swung around and was pitched and tossed about. Soon after the second chain went overboard, and then the bark drifted for a short time, when she struck heavily on the shoals two miles off Fourteen Foot bank. As each suc ceeding wave washed clean over her she was fast going to pieces, and her cargo of case and barrel oil was wash ed overboard. The danger of the posi tion was fully realized, but it was de cided to stand by the ship until day light. When morning broke the wind had not decreased, and it seemed only a question of an hour or so before the vessel would break to pieces. During the night her masts went by the board, and when It was time to leave her there was scarcely any of her cargo aboard. There were but two lifeboats. In an attempt to launch one of these it was lost. The other was all that was left to carry the thirteen souls aboard to an uncertain fate. Castenallo, at the last moment, refused to go, Baying all would be lost. Nothing remained but to leave him, and In the small boat the thirteen mariners put off. After a pull of over seven miles the Delaware shore was sighted, and soon after the wet and exhausted survivors landed on the beach. They were from daylight un til nearly 2 o'clock coming from the 111 fated vessel to land. At Cape May yesterday Charles Lo per and a mate, a Swede, started to cross the meadow In the high tide and were thrown from their yawl, which capsized. They swam to a knoll and there signaled their danger, while the tide gradually rose around them. They were eventually rescued In a battcau by George Roseman, who went out at the peril of his life. Twenty live are now known to have been lost ill Sunday's accident on the New iTork Central railroad, and 18 bodies have been found. The body of an unknown man was recovered yesterday, as well At that of the fireman. The day coach pt the 111 fated train was raised yester Httyf and in It was found a victim not llttltsrto included in the list of dead. Tile engine was also brought to the sur face, and With It the body of fireman John Q. Tompkins, tightly wedged be tween two masses of Iron In front. For some hours prior to the raising of the day car It was believed that sev eral more bodies would be found. Short ly after 3 o'clock the large derrick brought up the day coach from the bot tom of the river, where it had Iain completely submerged since the day of the wreck. Slowly the great mass rose out of the water, and It was seen that but for the smashed In rear end and a hole In the roof the ear was Intact, and it seemed hardly possible that any large number of its occupants could have escaped. When the water had drained out of the car those watching the operation saw at one of the win dows a human head, and Just beyond the feet sticking out from under one of the seat tops. The jvreckers tore aside the debris and Boon had the body out. No more bodies were found. The body removed, the 17th since the wreck and the 20th known victim, was that of a man, 35 years of age, dark, with a dark, short mustache. He was dressed In a gray woolen outing shirt, dark blue vest and trousers, a black necktie and yellow socks. The shoes had been removed and so had the coat, and it is evident that the man had been sleeping In the seat when death came, In one of the pockets of the vest was a wallet containing six $10 bills, a $2 bill and a casualty insurance company ticket, such as is sold at railroad sta tions. The Insurance ticket was made out for the usual sum of $2,E00 In case of death, but very curiously the name, or rather the last names of both payer and beneltclary, was missing. The card read, so far as could be deciphered, "Ike H" aB the purchaser's name and "Mrs. E." as the person to whom It was to be paid. Last night the body was Identified is Isaac Rettenberg, of New York, 32 years fit age, a dealer In eye glasses. His Insurance policy was payable to his mother In Cleveland. Rettenberg was on his way to New York to attend his brother's wedding. The contents of the car, other than the body, showed that the people had made a rush for their lives. There were women's shoes and hats, six: men's hats, a woman's coat, eight gripsacks of various kinds, two men's coats and many small garments. Another Interesting event of the day was the raising of the express car, from which it was alleged that a large sum of money had been lost by the dropping to the river bottom of. a small safe. Ohe-hnlf ot the car had been entirely demolished and washed away. None of the valuables in the car were lost. The big dynamite proof safe was Intact and fastened to the wall in Us proper place. The small safe, whlrJh It was thought might have dropped out of the broken car, was found In a corner, and the only thing of value known to be missing Is a small package of Jew elry. Of course all of the merchandise in the car had been destroyed. The engine was dragged out of the river last night Just before dark, and President Chauncey M. Depew and the three railroad commissioners, with As sistant Sscretary Edward McEntee, saw the operation. The engine wa.j worked upon for several hours, the divers finding It almost Impossible to get the heavy chains under it, as it had gone so far In the mud. When it came to the surface it was seen that the trucks were missing, and that the front of the boiler and the guards were smashed into an unrecognizable mass. The body of Fireman Tompkins was wedged In front of the boiler,- where the engine number plate Is, and It had to be dragged out. Tompkins was dressed In his working suit. There is some speculation as to how he came to be on the front of the machine. The theories are either that the first ter rific lurch from the banks threw him forward through the cab's window, and that the hend of the engine caught him and carried him down Into the water and mud, or else that he was on the front of the engine nttendlng to the headlight or oiling when the crash came. The ponderous machine had driven him into the mud so deeply that he was not visible to the divers when they walked around It. If the raising of the trucks of the engine and tender do not bring to light the bodies of Engineer Poyle and young McKay dredges will be put to work In the vicinity to see whether they are burled in the mud. Chauncey M. Depew, president of the New York Central railroad, declares that there are suspicions that the wreck at Garrisons was caused by a dyna mite explosion.
