Tho officials of the Chinese location havo no information throwing any light on tho roported re fusal of tho homo government to permit tho members of tho mixed British and American commission to investigate the Kuchong massacre. In fact, tho legation has not yet been apprised officially of the appointment of the commission. The only explanation given as a reason for tho roported refusal is that the action re ported to have boen taken was by tho Chlneso local officials, who possibly have not been informed by tho central govern ment of the appointment of tho commls slon to mako tho Investigation, the local officials acting meroly on their own In cllnatlou in tho promises. ' If tho roported action of tho Chlneso be correct It Is apparently not a matter of very groat surprise to the officials of the state department hero. They attribute any refusal of the local authorities to per mit the commission to invostlgato the troublos to tho woll known doslres of the Chineso to conduct such inquiries by their own people, tho dlsllko to having any in terference by outsiders, nnd to tho gen eral suspiciousness with which they look upon forelgnors. The present troublos, tho officials say, aro not dissimilar in any materlnl respect from others that havo occurred from tlmo to timo in the diplomatic history of the governments Interested, and a glance at tho British and American bluo books will substantiate this statement. A somewhat analogous case to tho pres- sent, it is said, Is found in that of Ray mond Mai-gory, a British officer in tho consular service, who wus killed In tho provlnco of Yunan about lit teon or sixteen years ago. In this instanoo tho British government demanded reparation, nnd tho appointment of a commission to make an Investigation resulted. At first there was decided objection by the local officials to having foreigners tako part In tho in quiry, but tho matter was finally adjusted In n wny apparently satisfactory to tho British. It is not feared hero in official circles but that any complications that may have arisen in the prosont case will be adjusted and amplo reparation bo mado for the lives that were lost in the Kuchong mas sacre. . The Gumry hotel, on Ltiwreneo street botwoon Sovontconth nnd Eighteenth streets, was demolished by nn explosion which occurred shortly utter midnight. Tho explosion took plnco j in tuo rear portion 01 uie uUUUlllgs, and Its cnliso has not yet been ascertained, l'hero was no warning of the sudden illanstor, nnd It Is certain that a number of guests and omployes of tho hotol havo lost thoir lives in tho ruins, tho building bolng a complete wreck. It is a marvel that nny escnpod. Thus far only fifteen peoplo who aro known to have been in tho building at the tlmo of tho oxplosion are accounted for. To add to the horror of tho situation 1 tho ruins of the big building took flro, nnd many unfortunates who were not killed outright by tho crash were slowly burned to death, Their screams nnd plead ings that thoy be killed to save them from torturo by Are were piteous in tho ex treme, but tho terror stricken bystanders wore powerless to render thorn nny nld. Following is tho list of the dead so far as yet ascertained: Petor Gumry, owner of tho hotel; R. C. Grolnor, manager of the hotel, son-in-law of Peter Gumry; Mrs. K. O. Grelner, clerk of tho hotol, daughter of Petor Gumry; child of Mr. and Mrs. R. C. Grelner; Genoral Charlos Adams, Man ltou; Will Richards, elevator man; Al Blake, Pueblo, Colo. ; Myron E. Hawley, Union Pactflo railroad olerk, Denver; James Murphy, contractor, Denver; Goorgo Burt, passenger conductor on the Rock Island railroad, Colorado Springs; Mrs. G. R. Wolf and daughter, Lincoln, Neb. ; E. M. Edwards, butcher, Denver; Krod Hubbold, or Hausor, of Elizabeth, la.; threo chambermaids, names unknown; one boll boy, name unknown. The force of the explosion, and tho con ousslon of the falling walls, shattorod the windows on both sides of Lawrence street, from Seventeenth to Eighteenth streets, and back of tho hotel, on Larimor street, the plate glass windows of all tho busi ness houses wero utterly wrecked, and be lated pedestrians wero badly Injured by tho falling of glass nnd flying debris. Tho fronts of many buildings in tho vicinity wero very badly wrecked. Tho hotel structure for 100 foot along the alley, and oxtendiug soventy-flvo feet toward tho front, was n mass of debris. Brick and plaster wero plied In heaps twonty foot high, and from tills mass of wreckage could be heard tho moans of tho Injured and dying. Tho list of dead and missing now num bers twonty-fivo, making the disaster tho worst that ever occurred in tho city. Only seven bodies have thus far been recovered, being thoso of Manager Grenior and his wife, clasped in each other's arms; Gore Burt, a Rock Island conductor; Mrs. Georgo R. Wolfo nnd daughter, Fred Hubbold and Will Richards, tho elovator operator of tho hotel. Among tho missing is Included Elinor Pierce, tho night engineer, who is suid to havo entered vho hotol just before thu ox plosion occurred. It is to this man's euro lessuoss that tho dUaster is attributed. Tho scones surrounding the doath of James Murphy, contractor, were heart rondlng. The firemen ongagod at the rear of the building heard tho agonizing cries from tho man that ho wus burning and asking them to continue to play tho water. His two lower llnito were pinned botweon two heavy joists. After tho most herculean efforts, with dense smoko blinding them, tho flremon released Murphy's loft leg. At this moment a sheet of flumes compelled them to withdraw. Murphy then offered his rescuers $10,000 to get him out, and pltoously begged them to chop his leg off. A second later tho west wall collapsed and covered Murphy with tons of ruins. Mr. Murphy camo to Denver from Omaha six years ago. M. E. Letson, n dairyman of this city, was in tho ruins ton hours before ho was rescued. His Injuries are a crushed arm, several contusions und tho shock to his norvous Bystem. Mr. Letson said: "I was more incased than pinioned, us only my left log and my right arm was hold down by weights. You cannot have tho slight est Idea of my feelings as I lay there In tho bottom of the basement, with all the ruins on top and around me, hearing tho excruciating cries of the dying and those in agony, and being ulmust overcome by tho shock, soaked with water and almost drowned, and fearing that the next min ute I would be buried alive." A portion of the hotel is still standing, gaunt and sinister, constantly threaten ing to cniBh down upon thoso in the ruins at any moment. The search for victims lias been carried on to the utmost energy constantly with the aid of twonty uro lights. Flames broko out afresh In tho wreckage, and tho flro engines are agulu pouring forth water, still impedlug the work of rescue. A vast throng surrounds tho building on every side, pressing forward as far us tho fire ropes will allow. Tho police aro con stantly guurdlng ngulnst any one slip ping through tho lines, on account of the groat danger that tho front of the build ing may full. The total loss caused by tho explosion ond flro is about t25,0O0. Tho Gumry ho tel was worth about 125,000, aud hud $3,000 worth of furniture.
