Tho Dofendor bent tho Vigilant In the run of fotty-two miiog from New London to this point, nd boat her so badly that the latter' Wends must now Admit that tho new boat Is bet tor than the old. How mnoh better can not bo stated, as no reasonable compari son of the champion of 18U8 and tho no fender of 1895 can be made, only by tho handful of people who know about whnt tne iJefoiulor will glvo to tho vigilant in ; the mutter of time nllownnoe. An Asso ciated Press reporter was told by n yachts man who is in a position to know that the Dofondor should allow the Vigilant four minutes, or thereabouts, In a forty mllo rneo. If this is true tho Dofender did all that could havo boon askod of her, beat Iur tho Vigilant by atloastoight minutes. Just at tho start tho Vigil ant's mainsail was spilt, but tho accident had no appro clnblo effect on the result ot the raoe. Tho tear was low down, near tho foot of tho sail, and tho yncht was going with free dom. Tlu wind was aboain, and gave tho two men who wore Bent out on the boom to mako tho necessary patch no difficulty at all. Tho wenthor was lu favor of tho Vigi lant all tho way through. On leaving Now Iiondou it was inoro than freo wind. It was brisk, but tho big follows wora nblo to carry ull sail, Including club top sails, nnd tho wntor wus smooth enough to suit tho Vigilant in horvory best days. From start to finish tho Dofendor gained on tho Vigilant, and calno homo so far ahead that tho doubting Thomases, who woro asking ouoh othor, referring to tho America's cup races, "Will sho do?" lire now saying at least, "Woll, sho's tho best boat wo over had," and that confession from tlicso people is to bo thought ovor moro than onco. It moans that tho splon- dld win of tho keol boat show3 that sho is Improving right along In form. If tho advancement continues nt tho ratio displayed betwoon tho sail of Tues day and that of yosterday tho Vigilant will bo nowhore In today s race. It was almost a run with spinnakers yosterday, and yet tho Defondor gained at ovCry point. Tho finish showed the now boat to be over twolvo mlnutos to tho good on actual time. On leaving Now London tho yachts sailed down with a beam wind to tho nice. The Defondor had had hor steorlng gear patched up during the night, and her sailors woro smart enough to get her over tho starting lino ovor a minute nhoad of tho Vigilant. This Voluutoor was pretty quick, and went awny flvo seconds after tho Vigilant. Tho Jubiloe was thero, but for 6omo reason or other sho did not start with tho others, and this fact lessoned tho intorest In tho wholo proceeding, as every body wanted to know what Gonornl Palno's vessel could do with tho champion of 1893 and tho now fin keel yacht. Tho boats which did start had a good race. Thero was a fine breeze, which was always fair. Thoro woro a good many poo plo ovor ut Fort Adams to seo tho finish, and all woro courteously recolvod by Llou tennnt Sampson, tho officer of tho day. When tho Defender hovo in sight bohlnd the hills at Castlo Point sho was speedily picked out by name, hor almost straight up and down gaff making her easy to bo distinguished. Soon the Vlgilnnt's lofty club topsail was seen over tho point. Thero was a good two miles between hor and the Defondor. The resultof yostorday'sraoo shows that the fight for the cup on the American side will be mado by either Defender or Vigi lant. The Jubiloe, by hor refusal to start, indicates that she does not want to go into a race when thero is a blow, nnd a vlotory in such woathor can not bo of groat value just now, for tho chances are eight to one that the cup races will be sailed In light weather, and that is tho game tho Val kyrie III was built for, Tho following table shows the time at start and finish: Start. Finish. Defender .11:20:32 3:26:42 Vigilant 11:21:60 3:10:07 Volunteer ll:r.';00 8:62:15 Why tho Jubilee Did Not Race. New York, Aug. 1. It appears that General Payne did not enter the Jubilee yesterday because the boat met with an aooldent on Tuesday as the yacht was en tering the harbor of New London. She started the turn buckle of her port halyard and became Incapacitated for duty. She was towed hero last night and will bs all ready for tho raco for the Goelet cup to morrow. CHKUoo, Aug. 1. Thoro is now llfctls lonbt that tiio Chicago police Will C0n dot H. H. Holmes, alms Mmlgett, alias lrt, Wins Gordon, now in tho I'hiladel' phia Jail, of tho murder of at least seven persons. They know tho name of tho man who oan linns; Holmes by giving his tttt mony, and Unit man is in their powor. This man is Allen, with voral aliases, now in jail at Little Hock, Ark., for horae stealing. Allen is ivs cloio to Holmes through nil his murder plots as Janitor Qululau, and ho is ready to toll all he known. This in cludes tho pointing out of the resting place of the Williams sisters, whom he himself assisted in secreting nfter they were murdered. Ho Will toll how they woro murdered and exactly how all their bodloswere handled. He will also glvo full and cxplloit Information concerning tho murder of Pletzel and his two chil dren, nnd of Mrs. Julia. Connors and her daughter Pearl. In short, this man is tho only other liv ing person nsldo from Quinlan who can toll tho story of tho murders In the char nel house at Sixty-third nnd Wallace streets. Asldo from Quintan he is tho only man who can toll of Holmes' crimes In a way th.it will bring forth ovidoncos of Holmes' guilt. Tho mention of his 11:11110 by tho polico mndo Janitor Quinlan turn palo and rofnso to talk further, and a confossion from Quinlan is almost as sured, but will come too Into, as Alton Is to bo tho stnto's witnoas. It has been arranged to requo3t his par don from tho govornor of Arkansas if ho will give his testimony with rlio under standing that ho will not bo prosecuted in Illinois for complicity lu Holmos frauds and crimes. Another link in tho chain binding Quin lan to tho alleged crimes of Holmes was forged yosterday by an admission mndo by Quinlan when questioned by Chief of Polico Iiadenoch. Ho said ho was hired by n muu named Allen to go to !Tort Worth, Tex. Quinlan had previously claltnod that he had no knowledge ot any crimes committed by Holmes, although ho had admitted that in Fort Wortii ho met and know u man called "Mascot." Now that Alien and "Mascot" nro prac tically proven to bo ono und tho same man Quiulan's contradictory stories havo placed him in a still worso light with the polico. Experiments wero mado yesterday with the liquid found in tho bottom of tho vat In tho cellar of Holmes' house, and it wus found that whenever mixed with benzlno or kerosene oil It would emit a vapor so deudly that no human being could live in it. Whether or not Holmes used tho vapor for suffocating his victims is not known, but tho polico aro Inclined to favor such a theory. FoutWouth, Tex., Aug. 1. William Cappa, who is now in Chicago on tho Holmes case, belongs to tho firm of Cappa & Canley, of this city, who some timo ago entered Bult against tho present holders of property owned by the Williams sisters. The suit is brought at the Instance of the heirs of the girls, and it is claimed that the deeds wero forged by Holmes. Allon, alias Hatch, the Arkansas convict, who is to anxious to tell his connection with the murders, was at one timo in the employ of Holmes lu this city. Allen went by the name of Mascot in this city, and It Is bo lleved hero that he can tell a great deal about Holmes and his transactions If ho wants to. Allen was an ex-convlct from the prison at Jollet. While Holmes, orPrntt, as he was known here, was living in this city ho started to put up a large building. It was objected to on the ground that it was a firo trap and the authorities forced him to remodol It somewhat. In view of the recent devel opments in Chicago the authorities have made an investigation of tho building, which leaves no room for doubt that Holmos had plauned it for a death trap. One room at tho top of the house has twelvo exits by which n person can escape, while an enolosed chute runs down to the basement, in which a body could bo trans ferred without any ono being tho wiser. In this basement a large archway had boon built ovor the Bower in such a way that ho could easily put In a trap door opening into tho sower. Under tljo floor of the house was found a largo pit, tho in tended use of which can only be conjec tured. Holmes probably intended this building to be used us ho afterwards used his house in Chicago. Says BI1 Clgrand la In a Convent. Philadelphia, Aug. 1. H. II. Holmes was seen in his coll by a reporter, and talked freely about the charges made against him, ospoelally those relating to Emily Cigraud. Ho admitted that ho had botrayed the girl In Chicago, and that sho had afterwards told this fact to a priest, who Insisted that a murringo ceremony be performed. Holmes says that ho took her to nu obscure placo in Minnesota, and marrlod her under an assumed naiiio, tho coreniony being fraudulent. Pat Quin lan, ho doclared, know of Holmes' rela tions with tho girl, having found her in his room ono night. In May, lgU3, tho prisoner continued, Miss Cigraud loft hU employ and went Into a convent, where sho' now Is, Quinlan, ho asserts, knows all .bout hor and oan produco her at any timo.
