No. 40 West Sovonty-flfth strcot, yester
day. Genoral Nowton has been 111 sinco
April 1 Inst. Ills death was due to chronlo
rhoumntlsm. Tho funeral will bo held on
Saturday at St. Francis Xavlor's church.
Genornl John Newton was a bravo sol
dier, but ho was best known to tho world
at largo for his services In removing tho
rocks that from tho earliest tlmos rondorcd
navigation dangerous In the channol of
Hell Gato, as tho strait connecting the
East river at Now York with Long Island
sound Is known. This glgantlo work was
begun In 1803 and was accomplished by
honeycombing the rooks with tunnels and
passages and then blowing tho mass up
with dynamite. Two rpeks wore to bo re-

was watched with tho keenest Interest by

cess was perfect, and Gonoral Nowton won
plaudits and honor from tho scion tlflc men
and organizations of ovory country.
It was not until Oct. 10, 1885, that the
second big blast was set off. It was qulto
as successful as the first, and sinco then
thoouco turbulent wators of Hell Gato
have beon as placid as a river, and the
benoflt to commorco has bocn almost in
calculable. For this aohlovomont General
Nowton was made a member of tho Na
tional Academy of Sctonce and an honor
ary momborot the Amorlean Socloty of
Civil Ensrineors.
John Nowton was born In Norfolk Aug.
21, 1823. Ho was graduated from tho mil'
itary academy at West Point In 1813 and
stood socond In his class a notable ono, for
It Included William S. Rosccrans, John
Pope, James Longstrcet, Henry L. Eustls
and others who wero scarcely loss eminent
in after years. From 1812 to 1813 ho was
assistant professor of engineering at Wost
Point and was promoted into tho engineer
corps as second lieutenant. During 18uS
ho was chlof engineer of tho Utah oxpodl-
tlon. but fur tho remainder of tho tlmo uu
til 1800 he was engaged lu tho construction
of fortifications and other englnoorlng
works along tho Atlantic and gulf coasts,
having in tho moantlmo, July 1, 18j0,
reached tho rank of captain.
When tho civil war broko' out ho was
chief enginoor of tho dopartmont of Poun
syl vanla. Thon he hold a similar appoint
ment In the department of tho Shonaa
doah, and from August, 1801, till March,
1803, was assistant engineer In tho con
structlon of tho defonso in Washington
In August, 1801, ho was mado major, and
In Soptomber of tho samo year brigadier
general of volunteors. In Dcccmbor, 1805,
ho was brovetted major genoral of tho
roaular army. His commands and sor-
vlcos during tho civil way may bo sum

mandod a brigade and fought at Gaines
Mill and Glondnle, South Mountain nud
Antletam, for tho latter reoolving tho
brevet of lloutenant colonel in 1802, He
commanded a division at Fredericksburg
and also at Gettysburg, and received tho
brevet of colonel In 1803 for his services
during tho lattor engagement. Ho was in
command of tho First corps from July to
Hocomber, 1803, and tho second division of
tho Fourth corps during tho invasion of
Georgia from May to Soptomber, 1801. Ho
was engaged at Hooky Faced Uldgo, Ho-
saoa, Dallas, Konosaw, Peaoh Treo Crook
and Jonosboro, and tho slego and capturo
of Atlanta. From October, 1801, to June,
1805, ho was in command of tho district of
Koy wost and Dry Tortugas. For his sor-
vicos at Atlanta aud Poaoh Trco Creek he
was brovotted brigadier genoral, and at
tho olose of the war major general of tho
United btatee army.
Hosldoa his great engineering work at
Hell Gate, ho had much to do with tho forti
flcatlons in the vicinity of New York, the
construction of the fort at Sanuy iiooK,

No shipments of coal are being made at
Blueflold. The cut of 20 per cent. In wages
was never contemplated by the. Virginia

adjust railroad rates on shipments.
Olneyvllle's Striking Mill Workers.
Providence, JIny 2. Additions to tho
ranks of tho strlkors at Olnoyvlllo bring
tho number novr out to over 8,000, tho op
eratlves of tho Taft & Wceden mill and 250
operatives from tho Klvorslde mill having
struck yosterday afternoon. The primal
cause of tho genornl strlko Is given out its
the failure of the manufacturers to restore
the reduction in wages mado over a year
ago. Tho strikers declare that they are
prepared to stay out as long as tho manu
facturers hold together. It Is expected that
the operatives in tho Saxon, Saranao and
the remaining employes In the Riverside
mills will como out this evening. Tho At
lantic mill strlkors wont to the mills in a
body and awaited for James Whipple, ono
of their number who want back to tho dyo
house to work, to como out. When ho ap
peared they followed him and hooted at
him for several blocks, but no violence
was attempted.

dred employes of tho Jnnosvlllo Cotton
company struck yesterday because tho
company would not restore wages which

Demanding Signatures to the Scale.
Steudesville, O., May 2. Tho miners
In Yorkvillo and Wheollng and Lake Erlo
mines, numbering noarly 2,000, went on
