Bhoulil the Hill Not l'nil til SenaU tie fore thf Fourth the Democrat! Will Try to Secure a, fleMlon on Indepen dence Day The House Waiting. WASIIINOTON. July 2. The senate today entered upon the fourteenth week of the tariff dehate. It Is expected that the final vote previous to returning the bill to tho house will be taken before adjournment tomorrow night. There Is no agreement to this effect, but Democratic and Repub lican senators generally express the opin ion that this can bo accomplished. They say that the end could havo been reached last week but for the loss of two days, Monday and Saturday. The Democrats made nn effort to secure an agreement to fix Tuesday as the day for the vote, when the arrangement wns made on Friday for the Saturday holiday, nnd would have succeeded but for the fact that the Republicans did not wish to put themselves in the attitude of In rmy way conniving at tho pnssage of a bill which they have so strcuuouly opposed. There Is, however, no disposition to louger postpone final action on the bill, nnd Republican senators generally nppear as anxious ns the Democrats to have tho bill disposed of In time to permit an ad journment over the Fourth. There Is still, however, a good deal of work to be accomplished before this stage can be reached, and it lies within tho power of nny senator who may feel so dis posed to delay action Indefinitely. Some of the amendments yet to be In troduced by. the finance committee will provoke more or less discussion. The sugar duty nnd the free wool question nre expected to be made tho basis of speech making by Republicans and Populists. Much curiosity is felt over the attitude of the Populists on thesugar schedule. They Bay thnt whatever they may do they will not do anything to prolong debate to any extent. If the bill is not voted upon as a whole beforo the senate adjqurus tontorrow tho Democrats will try to secure a Fourth of July session. They will probably nsk tho lunate to hold night sessions tonight and tomorrow If necessnry to secure action. When the senate bill is disposed of tho appropriation bills on the calendar will be taken up. Speaker Crisp is seeing that tho necks are kept clear in the house of representa tives for tho tariff bill. This accounts f',r the failure of the rules committee to ogree on any delln'to program of bills to bo con sidered during tho coming week. The legislative business is merely drifting, ns there is no desiro to tie the hnnds of tho house by n set schedule which might In terfere with tho speedy consideration of the tariit bill when It comes over from the senate. . Tho expectation of Chnirmnn Wilson and other ways and menus members Is thnt the tariff bill will pass the senate on Tuesday, but It is not believed the official notification will come to tho house before Thursday. The first move when the bill is reported bnck will be n formal motion by Mr. Wilson that It be referred to the ways ana means committee, it is ex pected that this reference will be made without objection. Tho tariff-bill will then bo retired to the secrecy of the com mlttee for some days, but Representative Dryan stated today that one or two days ought to sulllce lor such work as tho com mittee would do. In that case the sub mission of the bill to conference may oc cur friuay or Saturday ol this week, al though thlswould be exceptional dispatch. An A ceil l'hllailelplilan'a Suicide.
