A Wnrrnnt Imued for the Arrett of Mi xta AlcCurt'on on tlie Cliurtro of Infanti cide Iter Present M'licrealiouta Sliroud ed In Myntery Some AVry liulimi-lns Evidence Airnlntt the Accused, PiiilADKi.riHA, June 18. A new light was yesterday afternoon thrown upon the murder of the strangled babo found float ing In tho Delaware Sunday, concealed In a wttuhel, with a gag ot rugs Htuffed In Its mouth and the eyes starting from the head through ttrangulntlon produced by a stock ing drown chokingly about the throat. The verdict of tho coroner's jury In the case at the inquest was Infanticide at tho bauds of some person unknown. Tho deck bands uu the ferryboat At lantic, plying between Vino street and Camden, at 0:30 o'clock last Saturday night, observed a trimly dressed young woman, carrying a sutcliel, who did not alight when the bout entered her slip on the Jersey shore. Instead she remained standing on what was then tho forward deck and set tho satchel down by the rail. As the Atlantic stalled lor Her lettirn trip the girl tried vainly to kick the gripsack under the lower bar of the railing. The space was too contracted for her to ac compllsh her purpose, and she picked the satchel up again and entered the cabin. 1 lien tuo deck nanus, rendered curious by her unusual proceedings, followed and saw her lllng the grip through tho window Into the liver. The men accosted her and demanded an explanation of her stay on the boat, and or her action In flinging the grip overboard. Her replies were not such ns to quiet their suspicions, and the harbor police were notllled. Ulllccrs arriving, the young woman was arrested in tho ferry house at Vino street and removed to the fourth District police station, where she gve her name as Lizzie McCnrrou, and added that she was em ployed as a servant at No. 1408 1-2 Arch street. Upon being questioned quietly by the police, she told a fairly straight story. averring that the satchel was an old one, and contained nothing but a couple of worthless skirts. Tired or carrying It about, and resolved to buy n new one, she threw it Into the river as useless. The authorities were at the pains to in vestigate her story as to her identity and residence. So far as her statements could be traced, they were found to be truthful in every particular. The case against the prisoner, trifling as it was at the outset, hud now vanished entirely. The young woman was released before midnight, and die promptly made herself as scarce as was ihe evidence against her. But in the mind of Sergeant Allen, ot o harbor police, lingered a very keen re collection of the girl and her mystery. a UtMlay he read the published accounts oi the inquest on the infant found strangled in the floating gripsack. Thereupon he went to Captain Linden, the superinten dent of tho bureau. The superintendent ordered the sergeant to swear out a warrant for Lizzie JlcCar--'iil's apprehension on the charge of Infant cide. The warrant was placed in the andsof Detective (Jeyer. Gcyer, in company with Allen, went to lie Artb stieet house where the girl was niployrd. Of course, (-ho wasn't there, ud no hint of here whereabouts had been cceived. But in her room the ofliccrs mind a tiunk containing unmistakable ,roof that the corpse of the child had been or some time concealed there. A picture in the room was Identified by Hi n as I Im likeness of the girl who flung he satchel from the window of the ferry oat into the river. And now, having discovered so much, he authorities are asking everywhere, . here is Lizzie McCarron I It lias been ascertained that the girl iime from Toronto three weeks ago, and ns hired from nn rmplovnient agency.
