Law ler as assistant general malinger of the Philadelphia and Rending Railroad Company, with otileo at 227 South Fourth street, Philadelphia. Mr Law ler" has beeti the efficient superintend ent of the Williamsport division of the road .Bluce June, 1887, which lie has made one of the best in thesyutein. He Is about fifty-two years of age, and became a railroader at tho age of fif teen. Ho has served through all the grades of the business as a clerk, station agent, brakemau, conductor, road master, assistant superintendent, and general superintendent, and has prov ed his ability, as a practical and suc cessful railroad man. He 13 very pop ular in the West Branch country, about Williamsport, where he haB at tracted to himself: a large circle of friends, and his promotion is very gratifying to his many admirers, and la another evidence of Mr. MoLeod's faculty for selecting able assistants. A Siiknandoah paper copies a stale Item, a week old, from a Hazleton paper In order to give the Pottsville fireman a dirty illiig. The Jealouny of the Shenandoah fog horn la never bo well displayed as when slur ring Pottsville aud Pottsville people. But somebody created tho editor of that' paper, aud no doubt did It for some purpose (?) Republican. The drunken aot who wrote the above kuew helled when he penned it. One of the mo3t ellectusl and, per haps, the only olleotuitl mode of keep ing cholera out of this country will be a complete chatige in the laws regu Iatiug immigration. Year by year the character of immigration has under gone a complete chauge. A large amount of the very worst materlul of foreign countries has been emptied upon our shores. For a time, as has been substantially demonstrated, pau pera and convicts were sent here at th expense of the oountry to which they belonged. That lias been stopped, but we are atill getting thousands of aliens, whose room here is far more desirable than their company, and the time has come when such Increments toour pop ulation should be stopped. We have room for many more strangers, but in glviug them the prlvelege of enjoying the blessings of this free oountry of ours, we should not forget the right to lay down rules and regulations that will protect ub from the Impositions that for several yeara have been largely practiced upon us. The Haxleton tfenMnel la responsible for lb foliowlBK. "Two fireman from Pottsville were arrested for Bteallng bunting belonging to Decorator Heller. They were given a hearing this after noon nnd left their gold watches as se curity for $11.50. They left for Potls vllle wilh their four horses at once." There must bo some mistake. Potts vllle's fireman are not constituted that way. Chronicle. O, no! Pottsville people nrofaiuts compared with other. Crawford, of tho United States fish commission, recently said to a Philadelphia Press man: "Wo have llttlo doubt now that be fore two moro years we shall havo evolved what the seaboard public has been clamoring for tor so many years tho boneless shad. Of course, I don't mean a shad that is actually boneless, but one that will be to all Intents and purposes aB boneless as tho flounders of this country or the solo of England. "This will have beon accomplished by tho cross'brecdlng of the shad, tho flounder and a peculiar jellyfish, which is a staple food among tho scacoast natives of Japan. Tho commissioner had much difllculty in securing a sup ply of theso jolly-fishes in a healthy, living condition, but at last managed to bring about one thousand one hun dred of them to San Francisco, and thenco to tho Chesapeake Bay hatchery in tank cars. They have thrived amaz ingly, and our experiments, while at first rather discouraging, now leave but llttlo doubt of turning out successful. "At first the crossing resulted in the production of a lot of jellyfishes with an elaborate outfit of bones, which waB just what wo didn't wnnt; but tlmo and study showed us our mistakes, and now wo have a few hundred half-grown shad with less than eighteen per cent, as many bones as the ordinary sort. Yes, as you say, science is a remarkable thing." Commodore Miller, one of the most notorious desperadoes in the Southwest, overpowered his guards at Dulla, Tex., mid, arming himself, with their weapons, liberated twelve fellow convicts, who with him were working in the quarries neur the city, uud made his escape. Tho Supreme Court has rendered Its dechiou in the celebrated quo warranto cases of l'helnn vs. Walsh uud Sanger vs. Henry.' The majority of tho judges agree In an opinion which sustains all that the Ite- publicMUB have been contending for two years. The court rules that COO ballots that were rejected by the moderators be cause they were double should have been counted. These ballots have been des troyed, and It cannot bo told whether they were Democratic or F.qiubllcnii, bo that the decision on thin point has not much bearing upon the main question. Tho oourtrul that tho errors in tho count shbuld Sabrrected; that the "lor" balloU BhotitiOftve been oouutod; that the 2H7 hlllats rejected in Litchfield should hare been counted, and thut 121 out ot the 120 ballots thrown out by the Democratic moderator iu Bridgeport Miould huve been counted.
