The Schuylkill Haven Call, Issued to-day, contains an editorial relating to the management of tho county almshouse that should convince any one of the necessity of putting hon est men like James B. Lesslg in charge of the Institution. The Call Bays : "Our people havo often read of some of the happenings at our almshouse. Now, upon good authority, we are enabled to add another page to the unsavory part of Its history. "For some time past rumors have boeu Hying about concerning the lit treatment of one of the inmates who travels under the cognomen of Tommy, a poor innocent creature who has a liking for 'spirits.' This youug man is very willing to please, and performs hU work, enpecially if thero is a reward forthcoming. A few weeks ko, we are told, some of the nfflnlata offered Tommy a class of whiskey if he would ooasent to havo liis face naiuted with wmio colored solution which would mar his good look's to a areat extent. He assented, received hU whiskey and Heated him self to have the operation performed. Wheu completed he was a horrible spectacle, and remained in this oonr ditioo tor a number of days, and, 'tis said, his face became very sore. "From the same source we learn that the beads of some of these ioor un fortunates are nartlv shaved and that they are teased aud made fools of in many ways, merely to amuse tho oMeiala who seem to havo nothing else to do, exoept pitch quoits, drink county whiskoy and Binnko county cigars. "A deplorable thing indeed, wheu we, the taxpayen?t B,lt Idly by and never lift a linger. We are caring for the paupers, sick und Insane, will we let them be abused? Tho officials wore placed there by a public vote, will wo let them abuso their trust? We should uot allow it. Rise up, peo pie of Schuylkill county, turn on tho hose of public opinion and swab out this unclean system. "Let us call your attention to an other thing. The county butcher kills enough at ouo time to last three or four days. He theirselects enough of the choice parts for tho stewards table, at which fifty dine. He then turns it qver to the pauper cook, who selects enough for hlmaeir ana ua elst&nts. The balance is boiled for the paupers. Tho steward and his family of 60 have the cream of th Institution on a separate table. The pauper cook and his assistants havo their own festive board And then thero are two pauper tables. The first Is occupied by those who cau work. And the second by the chronic sick, the young cripples, and the lii firm. They tako what Is left from the first table, and those who need meal inoaf, often get none. "Verily n, great change should take place, and no doubt will, wheu a few very Important revelations will be made lu the near futute."
