The New York Sun, Democratic, says of tbo tarlll Issue, "it will prove just as surely a Bepublicnn vic tory as it proved iu 18G3." That is he chief issue and one that the Har rison supporters will feurely win on. The discovery of 2,00 unused ad mission tickets to tho recent Demo cratic convention has caused Jmuch bitterness In Chicago. 13y mlslaylnir those tickets, instead of peddling them out to visitors at 5 each, tho town has simply thrown away a cool 510,000. Out of revenge for the kind (?) treatment received by the Democrats at Chicago during the week of the Democratic National Convention, Democratic Congressmen will refuse to vote an appropriation for the World's fair. That Is one way of getting even. Soldiers, do not be deceived in General (?) Stevenson. He is no more a General than Dave Skimmer horn, of Allentown. He received the title from being Assistant Postmaster General under Cleveland and never was In the army. Franklin caught the lightning and utlll7ed it for man's benefit. If some second Franklin will catch these western tornadoes and chain them down into man's slaves he will receive the thanks of a grateful people. The energy lost by these awful wind storms, if it could be employed iu use ful, rather than destructive work, would add a new force to the world's motive powers. There's a lot of Indian girls out in Washington who, if they are not millionaire heiresses, are possessed of sufficient to make a husband Indus triously and economically disposed comfortable. Ono girl has a father who offers 200 head of horses to the white man who will take his daughter oil his hands, and there are others of equally liberal disposition. But the husband must bo a whlto man a pale face. No more bucks for these gentle Mlnnehahas, They want white bus bands, and none others need apply. Tub New" York Standard Watch Company makes a 'watch which is a veritable marvel. It con tains 12 jewels, a handsome dial, plated case, Is made of the best material throughoutand wholesales at consider ably less than four dollars. A watch as good as it could not be had for less than $125 twenty years ago, Yet the labor pakTpg that watch receives not less than three dollars and as high as seven aud eight dollars a day. Asked how suoh pricesandhigh wages wero possible, the president of the company, Mr. W. C. Roberts, said; ."A single instance will answer the .question. ?A while .ago the screws used In that watch cost us 15 cents ( a' thousand. Our superintendent inven ted a machine which makes them at a cost of 2 cents a thousand. Such Improvements have been making constantly In the American watch business, and they have finally re sulted in placing the American watch in cheapness, quality and beauty away beyond comparison with any other watch on earth. The New York Press says that the report that the Cleveland manager? propose to abandon New Yoi k state to the Republicans without a struggle and couflno their actual efforts to the Northwestern states may eafely bo set down as a campaign ruse. No doubt Mr. Cleveland's large and brilliant corps of rainbow chasers under the leadership of Messrs. Vilas and Dick inson will peis vere In the ludicrous task of, endeavoring to persuade tho Western farmers and wage eiruers to vote against their own prosperity. But whatever the Democrats my do iu the West it is certain that they will make a desperate concerted iellort to carry the Empire state for Cleveland and free trade. That they can euc ceed in face of Ilspubliean energy and harmony aud Tammany disaileotion, the Press does not believe. But while New York state can bo made to cast its thirty-six electoral votes for the Republican nominees, it can be done only through iiard and systematic work. While neglecting no point in their line of battle the Republican generals will do well to mass their heaviest artillery right here In New York state. Buoklon's Arnica Salvo. Would you rather buy lamp chimneys, one a week the year round, or one that lasts till sqme accident breaks it ? Common glass may break or not the minute you light your lamp; if not, the first draft may break it; if not, it may break from a mere -whim. Tough glass chimneys, Mac beth's " Pearl-top" or "Pearl glass," almost never break from heat, not one in a hundred. Where can you get it? and what does it cost ? Your dealer knows where and how much. It costs more than common glass; and may be, he thinks tough glass isn't good for his business. Pittsburgh. Pa. Geo. A. Uacbeto Co. BLUE VERSUS CRIMSON TTT 7T The Great RowlngRa'ce at New London Friday. BOTH CREWS IN FINE CONDITION. Boating Men Say that Tnle Stnnils thg Heat Cliunce ol Winning An KfTurt Making to Keep All Craft l'rom tha Hirer During the Ilnco. New London, Coun., June 29. New London Is fast filling up with strangers in anticipation of tho greac race which is to be rowed Friday afternoon between C and 0 o'clock. 0. A. Rives of Now York will bo the referee. All the ar rangements for the race are now com plete. The best opinion here is favorable to Yale. In the minds o( those who have watched the two crewB closoly the blue will be the winner. People who are fa miliar with boating matters nud have followed the races for years say It is safe this year to bet on Yule at even money. Harvard Iirh tlje advantage of a big, brawny, heavy crew of experienced men, six of whom rowed in the race last year. She also has some advantage over Yale in the fact that her cedar shell is satis factory, while Yale's is not working well. Harvard is not rowing In as good form as when she came here, but the boys have put up their fctroke and are rowing faster. Couch Hurry Keyes has made some chnngesln the positions of tho men and in the style of rowing, especially in the matter of putting up her stroke. Har vard will start ut 41 strokes to the min ute and keep that tremendous rate up just as long us possible, then gradually drop to JjS. Stroke Lyman is a man of enormous strength and endurance, and can keep the stroke up just as high as he Is asked to. But the difficulty will be that the other men in the boat cannot follow him. Captain Kelton, who rows at No. 7, is not rowing with him, and the re sult is that the good form, which has always been Harvard's characteristic, is not obtained. Yale will not row much above Si strokes to the minute. She may start in at 80, but will drop to 34. Tlio Yalo crew is rowing in beautiful form, they row well together and the boat seems to 'get there." Payno is the only man who is not perfect in his work. He is a trifle slow. The report that Yale is over trained is false. The Yale crew Is in perfect physical condition, but they are highly strung men and need to be care fully handled. They are not old and seasoned veter ans like Harvard's crew, but are booked to win because of their stroke, which is the "flit thar" stroke, a long, slow, powerful sweep through the water, in stead of a quick dash at it. Harvard's obange of stroke nt the eleventh hour will probably be fatal. Harvard men feel that if Iho race were three weeks off their chances would be very much bat ter. The race will be rowed down stream this year. .Yale has the east or eel grass course. The flags have been shifted from their misplaced positions and the course stretches for four' miles perfectly straight away. The tide will be high Friday at about 2:80 o'clock, and as the agreement requires that the race be rowed within two hours of the flood tide the start will probably be made at 4 o'clock. The big excursion boats will be kept as'far as possible from the crews this year. For the last five years the suc tion on the crew .behind has been terri ble as the great steamers crowded down the course. Prominent boating men of Yale and Harvard are endeavoring to pass a bill at Washington to allow the closing of the river to all craft fpr four hours be fore the race.. The referee's launch is the only boat allowed to follow the Cambridge und Oxford crows over the Thames course. New Jersey Republican Committee. Jersey City, N. J., June 29.
