Something that Ought ftojjinterest Salisbury People Who}Have Loeated Elsewhere. THE STAR has for sale a limited num- ber of very fine pictures of Salisbury, size 22x32 inches, printed on extra heavy, smooth paper, from a very fine engraving. The sketching was done by T. M. Fowler, of Morrisville, Pa., who is an expert in his line and has}jbeen following his business in many differ- ent states of the Union. The picture is very clear and dis- tinct, showing all the streets plainly marked, and those familiar with the town can plainly recognize every build- ing in it. Tbe pictures have sold like “hot cakes” here, and a limited number have been placed with THE STAR to supply those at a distance, who may desire them. Every former citizen of Salisbury ought to have one of these fine engrav- ings, as they show the progress the old town has been making, which has been very great in recent years. But we cannot supply them all, and those who apply first will get them. The picture includes West Salisbury, the surround- ing landscape and some of the farm houses in the immediate vicinity, also a large number of the principal build- ings printed around the margin of the engraving, from special drawings. The editor of the Rockwood Gazette is a church member, and he prates much on religion and morality. He is a Methodist, and judging from some of his fiery editorials, he is an old-time shouting Methodist. The following paragraph taken from his last week’s Gazette is a sample of the shouting he has lately been doing at H. P. Snyder, editor of the Connellsville Courier: “We do not know H. P. Snyder per- sonally, but if the disreputable, false flings that appear among his vampire- like effusions indicate his character, it must be as black as the deepest shades of hell, and we have no desire to learn more of him. Evidence is apparent that he is a ‘sucker’ whose quill is in the spleen of the devil, a writer whose pen is dipped in the devil's broth and a ‘pusillanimous pusson’ whose doubtful influence, crystallized, is the double- distilled essence of hell.” Wow! Who'd a “thunk” that an old- time Methodist Sunday school super- intendent could reel off hellsfire and brimstone language like that? The whole thing reminds us of an incident we witnessed in our boyhood days. In passing the house of a prominent Methodist, we saw the man of the house out in the front yard belaboring his young son most unmercifully with a heavy stick. The youth yelled, cried and begged for mercy, but the staunch old Methodist parent was dumb to the boy’s piteous wails, and he kept right on landing blow after blow on his trembling child’s back. Another eye witness to the horrible affair was a brother of the man wield- ing the big stick. The brother was not a church member, but he was so hor- rified at the brutal scene he was wit- nessing, that he finally walked up to the fence and begged the irate father to desist. But the man with the big stick did not do so until he was ready, and he angrily replied to the remon- strating brother, “Mind your own business, I know mine!” “M’yes,” said the remonstrator, “maybe you do, but it ‘pears to me you’re a d—n pretty Methodest.” And to THE STAR it seems that there are others. More Smallpox in Salisbury. On Monday last quite a flurry of ex- citement was caused in this town by a fully developed case of smallpox, the victim being a married daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Norman Weimer, of Green- ville township. The daughter resides in Iowa, but came here last week to visit friends. When the disease broke out on her she was visiting with her uncle, Peter Hawn, who resides on John street, just north of the Dunkard church. When the eruption broke out, the lady did not know what ailed her, and she never dreamed of the malads be- ing smallpox. On Monday, however, she walked up town and entered Dr. Lichty’s office for a consultation. The doctor saw at a glance that she had a fully developed case of smallpox, and he lost no time in sending her back to the Hawn residence, where she re- mained in an out-building with her young babe until her father arrived in the evening and moved her to the country. She was literally covered with eruptions at the time, but did not feel very sick. Since she left town we have heard nothing of her condition. Quite a number of Salisbury people had been with the woman about the time the eruption was making its ap- pearance, and as a result the families of Frank G. Thomas, Peter Hawn, Henry Schramm, Milton Meese and Wilson Hawn were promptly placed under quarantine. It ishoped that the disease will not spread, but it need not surprise any one if it does. We are glad to note, however, that smallpox no longer creates a panic in Salisbury, and that but very few people are foolish enough to resort to the silly and criminal vaccination idiocy. ———— A Race Skyward. New York proposes to settle once for all the question of tall building su- premacy and establish herself as the only genuine skyscraping city in the world—all others imitations, One of the big life insurance companies will soon begin work upon an edifice that is to run up into the ether a distance of 560 feet. This will not only be taller than any other building, but will sur- pass by five feet any structure but one that man ever erected—the Eiffel Tow- er, Paris, with its 1,000 feet of sheer as- cent—the Washington Monument be- ing but 555 feet high, while the Cologne Cathedral, old Cheops, and other noted creations fall several feet shorter. Not all of the new building will be so high as this, but it is proposed to run up to the point indicated a tower seventy feet square. This section will have forty-two stories, and it is ex- pected that it will make New York immune from skyscraping competition for many years to come.—Johnstown Tribune. THE BLANKS WE KEEP. They Are Floating All Around in Somerset County. For some weeks past Somerset coun- ty has been dotted with real estate agents securing options for rights of way, and numerous civil engineers taking levels, distances and courses, indicating that something out of the ordinary was doing. A Westmoreland capitalist who was in town last week stated that he had received, from what he considered an authentic source, in- formation that options for rights of way had been given from the eastern terminus of the Pittsburg, Westmore- land & Somerset railroad, about seven miles northwest of Somerset, to the borough limits of Somerset. It is known that James B. Saylor gave a time option on several acres of his land near the S. & C. railroad, but for whom the options were taken the pub- lic has not learned. Within the last two weeks railroad engineers have been running lines through Rockwood, in the vicinity of Garrett, and at Downey tunnel, but they have been extremely reticent as to the purpose of their work, says the Connellsville Courier. ee — A BAD SCARE. Invitations were issued to particular friends and a gay and festive company of about 50 assembled and partook of the delica- cies. —Albion (Mieh. ) Press. THE CHILDREN'S FAVORITE.
