The Girl Saved the Goods. A few miles from Lucknaw is the little village of Dally Bay. Here some smugglers had landed a carge of their usual wares, and these were carried up the hill of South Cairn, waiting until a band of voliteers arrived with 3 string of pack horses to transport them inland for distri- pution. The Custom House officer in charge pf the district received information ot their doings, and, hurrying to the spot with the only guardsman disen- gaged, he promptly effected a seizure of the whole of the goods. The smug- glers skulked off, and the ene guards- man was sent buck to press men and horses in the King’s pame to convey the precious treasure to Stranraer. The officer, pluming himself not Lv little on his alacrity, sauntered, entry fashion, round and round his prize, which lay heaped before him in rich profusion, his sword and a prace of formidable pistols at his side. Presently Maggie McConnell ap. proached the great man, wishing hin 1 good-morning, to which he affably replied, and accepted Maggie’s pro:- terel hand. "His arm was thrust uj- ward, and at the same time he was encircled by the siren’s arms, and with a heavy fall was thrown belp- lessly on his back. Maggie then sat coolly down upon her victim, and baving placed hcr apron over his eyes she hel | him firm- ly down, as if held in a vise. Odd . or. even . for 15,000 ruineas?” 'Odd,” replied the peer, with the utmost composure. Dash vent the punch bowl against the wall, and the pieces being counted, 1nfortunately for the young hero ot she experiment, there proved to be in odd number, and he was a ruined nan. An Expert's Opinions Our readers have doubtless noticed the aumerous discussions by the scientists and hygienists as to the rela ive values of the various baking powders. A careful sifting of the evidence leaves no doubt as fo the iuperiority of the Royal Baking Powder in furity, wholesomeness and strength, from on scientific standpoint. An opinion, how- cver, that will have perhaps greater influ- mmce with our practical housekeepers, is that given by Marion Harland, the well known nud popular writer, upon matters pertain- ing to the science of domestic economy, of ponsckeeping: and of home cooking. Ina letter published in the Philadelphia Ladies Rome Journal, this writer says: “I regard the Royal Baking Powder as the best manutactured and in the market, solar as I bave any experience in the use of iuch compounds. Since the introduction of it into my kitchen 1 bave used no other in making biscuits, cakes, etc., and have en- lirely discarded for such purposes the home. meade combination of cne-third soda, two- thirds cream of tartar. “Every box has been in perfect condition when it cane into my hands, and tte con- tents bave given complete satistaction. It is an act of simple justice, and also a pleas- ure, to recommend it unquahfiedly to Amer- wan housewives. MarioN HARLAND.” A Little Kid.
